How do you worship?

How do you worship?

“By faith Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.”

I have always been intrigued by this verse.  It is in the middle of the faith chapter in Hebrews. Jacob, one of the twin boys of Isaac, was on his death bed and, after blessing each of the sons of Joseph, he worshiped while leaning on his staff.
When we think of worship we most often think of being in church. Usually our first thoughts are of the singing portion of the service.  While it is appropriate to worship God through song, that is not what was happening here. Jacob was very old and about to die. He had called for his son, Joseph, and Joseph’s sons to come to him. When they came he blessed them as was the custom of that day. I wonder what he was thinking. I imagine as he gazed at Joseph, who he thought was dead for so many years, and his two healthy grandsons, his heart welled up with thankfulness and awe.  He may have bowed his gray head and, because of the weakness of his body, leaned his weary frame on his staff. Looking back over his life he considered all God had done for him and couldn’t help but praise and honor the One who had never left his side.
What about you? Do you think of worship as something you do once a week in a church service? Though it is important to meet with other believers regularly, we must remember to incorporate worship in everything we do. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Take some time this week to sit quietly and think about what God has done for you. As you do, your heart will fill with joy and love for the One who cares about you more than anyone else in the world.  Develop this habit now and when you are old and feeble, needing to lean on a cane to support your body, you will still be worshiping.

Love,

Mama
