Tornado Warning

Tornado Warning

Dear Kids,

I Thessalonians 5:3. “While they are saying, ‘Peace and safety!’ then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.”

How many times have you ignored a warning? I’ve done it. Just a couple of days ago despite the tornado warnings that were all over the news I headed out the door to go to the school for Abigail’s band concert. Upon arriving at Cedarville High School I parked the car and ran to the door to escape the impending rain clouds that threatened a severe storm. We were all immediately sent to the enclosed instrument practice rooms to wait for the all clear signal. Even then I toyed with the idea of just going home, but thought better of it when the principal suggested I wait in the school office.

Back home Nathan was watching the sky through the window when he caught sight of the powerful twister. It came ripping across the field about a mile from us as the crow flies. Instead of immediately heading to the safety of the basement he ran to the front of the house just in time to see tall strong trees ripped from the ground and thrown into the air like grass flying from the back of a mower. Only then did he run to a place of shelter.

Later I learned of many others who also, despite the warnings, stood outside to take videos and pictures of the forceful tornado as it took a path of destruction across our town. Others continued to drive to various destinations as if there were no real danger. What were we all thinking? The warning had been given, we all knew that at different times other tornados had come bringing destruction, so why did so many of us ignore the warnings and do things that were unsafe?

Another family, upon hearing the warning siren, took it seriously. They ran as quickly as they could to the basement of their house where they and their guests hunkered down to wait out the storm. It was not a moment too soon. While they waited in the bowels of the house the angry wind passed over ripping the dwelling apart, demolishing the barn, and throwing the tops of the twisted silos across the barren fields. Pieces of many years of life and happiness lay strewn for miles over the acreage. But none of this really matters because the family had heeded the warning. They were safe in the cellar. Though it took some time to get them out, our wise friends and neighbors exited the place of refuge unharmed.

God’s Word gives warnings over and over that the wages of sin is death. Destruction will come suddenly on those who do not put their faith in Jesus, God’s provision. Yet the world continues on living life saying, “Peace and safety is ours. The world is getting better. All will be well,” thus ignoring what God says will surely come.

Do not ignore the warning signs! The time will come suddenly and you will not be able to escape. Enter into the place of safety now putting your faith and trust in the One who can save you – Jesus Christ! Heed the siren and yell warnings to your family, friends, and neighbors while there is still time.

Love,

Mama
