The Honeywagon

Dear Kids,

James 1:2-4. Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Dad and I went for a walk this morning through the countryside of Holmes County. We encountered many interesting sights as we passed a number of farms run by local farmers, many of whom are Amish. At one point we passed a filthy piece of equipment which Dad informed me was a “honeywagon.” This was news to me because it did not look at all like it would be carrying something sweet and delicious.
Dad laughed as he explained that “honeywagon” is a facetious term for a wagon or truck that holds liquid manure to spread in the fields. The farmers clean out their barns by loading up these wagons with the excrement from their livestock and then they spray it on their fields. The nutrients from the manure penetrates the soil and help the crops to grow better and stronger. Wow, how crazy is that!
This earthy example brought to mind today’s verse. How often in life we experience trials and testings.  To put it in plain terms we are often called upon to deal with crap that is produced by sin or by circumstances beyond our control. Whatever you want to call the heartaches, pain, and suffering, there is nothing sweet about it and very often it really stinks. But God, like the farmer, knows that these very undesirable things are exactly what help our faith to grow. These testings and trials produce endurance when we submit to God and allow Him to work in our lives. When we turn to God. He will help us to endure whatever we are going through and the results will be perfect and lacking nothing.
As we continued our walk, Dad and I also saw numerous fields starting to sprout corn. I couldn’t help but think that the honeywagon must have made its rounds there, nurturing the ground so that the now fertile soil could grow healthy crops.
When you are experiencing crap in your life and the trials seem too much to bear, reach out to the One who can get you through. Endure a little longer and He will produce a perfect harvest of faith in which you can truly rejoice.

Love,

Mama
