A Step Back in Time

Dear Kids,

Hebrews 10:14. “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”

This weekend I stepped back into time. The warm sun glistened on the small pond that graced the front of the home where we held a special auction on Saturday. No one who attended would argue that the temperature, the setting, and the atmosphere were not perfect. Many attenders came to buy, but others just to drink in the nostalgia created by the beautiful antique furniture and memorabilia from years gone by.
My favorite fascination was a room in the big white barn. In it was a small museum full of nursing and medical memorabilia from the ancient past. Old, dusty, white uniforms along with blue woolen capes, and linen children’s garments were hung on display beckoning one’s imagination to conjure up stories from a time long gone by.
As I perused some of the archaic medical equipment, I pondered the  progression we have made in the field of medicine. Many of the techniques used in the old days have been replaced with updated equipment and knowledge. New medicines and treatments have been found as well as the ability to see into a person’s body through such technologies as X-rays, MRIs and CAT scans. Better diagnoses can be made, more aggressive treatments given, and more lives saved now than ever before.
While physical healing has advanced greatly over the years, spiritual healing has also found a new and better way. In the Old Testament of the Bible those who wanted forgiveness of sin needed to make sacrifices of unblemished animals regularly. Since sin brings death, God allowed a perfect animal to take the place of the offender. The guilty were required to choose the best of their flock and bring it before God as an offering for their sin. This practice had to be done over and over again because the continual transgressions of the people were only covered by the blood – not taken away.
In the New Testament we learn that a new and better way had been found. God, in His mercy, sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to take the punishment for the sin of the world. Because Jesus was sinless, the sacrifice He made in giving His own life and blood for the guilty sinner didn’t just cover the sin but removed it completely. By His one and final sacrifice He has made perfect forever all who go to Him for forgiveness and put their faith and trust in the power of His blood. The disease of sin that infects each person who was ever born on this earth now has the perfect cure.
As I brought my wandering mind back from the distant past of white clad war nurses and suffering hospital patients with very little medical hope, I was so glad to be living in a new and better time – A time when the medical advances and technology make it possible for those with physical emergencies to have a better chance of healing and survival.
But I am even more glad that the Old Testament system of spiritual forgiveness of sins is only a shadow of the new and better way that was provided by Jesus. Let’s face it – no matter how many advances we make in medical science, physical death will still finally find its mark. But thanks be to Jesus Christ that by faith in His one final sacrifice for sin we can live forever spiritually.

Love,

Mama
