Half-Baked Oysters

1 Corinthians 13:4 “Love is patient…”

Thanksgiving dinner was ready to eat – well, almost. There was still one dish baking. The traditional scalloped oysters had been prepared and slid into the oven, but because of the doubled recipe it was taking a lot longer to bake. We waited and waited, but finally decided to get started anyway. Hey, the top of the casserole was crispy, so we were sure it would be fine.

After Dad’s prayer of thanks for all the blessings of the year, we began to pass around the food. The white slabs of turkey, piles of stuffing, mountains of mashed potatoes, covering of thick gravy, creamed corn bake, green bean casserole, sweet cranberry sauce, and – oh, yes – the delicious scalloped oysters made for a colorful and savory smorgasbord.

We each scooped big spoonfuls onto our china plates, tucked in our napkins, and began to eat. The table chatter quickly died as eyes met across the table. We were each having a similar problem. With a half-hearted smile I again attempted to stab the slimy undercooked oyster on my plate, but it slipped away from my fork and hid under the sea of turkey gravy. The oysters were not done.
Patience is a virtue, but not one that is very common in this culture of quick and easy. No one ever wants to wait for anything – not food, not family members running late, not blossoming relationships, not Thanksgiving dinner – and not scalloped oysters.
But love is patient! Love waits while a young child ties his shoes. Love listens while someone with a speech impediment tries to tell a story. Love watches carefully for someone to return home. Love prays deep into the night for those struggling with difficult situations – always searching expectantly for the answer. Love does not rush through life, but enjoys building relationships along the way.
God is so patient with us. He waits and waits for us to open the door of our hearts to Him. He waits for us to obey and follow Him, and He patiently disciplines us to grow more Christ-like. If we want to love like Him, then we need to develop patience too.Do you have a love that will endure all things with a pleasant attitude? Good things come to those who wait. But if you are not patient you will miss out on an opportunity to love like God does  – and you just might end up eating half-baked oysters.

Love,

Mama
