Attitude Audit

John 9:3b “. . . but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.”

Yesterday was not a day that any office manager looks forward to. I arrived at work at the same time the black sedan pulled in. Out of the car stepped the state auditor. We had been told that she would be coming and we had everything in order. Still, no matter how prepared you are, there is something very uncomfortable about opening the intimate details of your company’s books to the scrutinizing eye of a complete stranger.
We took her to a room and handed her all the ledgers and reports she had requested. Every once in a while she approached me to ask a question and make copies as she verified all the pertinent numbers and information. As I thought about the tedious process, I couldn’t help but consider how beneficial it would be if we all took an occasional audit of our personal attitudes.
Turning my musings inward, I recognized that my own recent frame of mind harbored some unthankfulness and frustration. The pressures of Christmas activities along with some unplanned financial needs and other concerns had unbalanced my emotions and thought processes. My quick attitude audit revealed that I had misplaced my peace and forgotten many of the blessings that I enjoy every day.
In the evening I attended my weekly Bible study where we read about a man who was born blind. This man truly had a big problem. Even worse the disciples were trying to figure out if his blindness was caused by some sin that either he or his parents had committed. Jesus corrected them by saying, “. . . this (blindness) happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.”

Wow! That got me. Maybe my own personal struggles were an opportunity for God to display His glory in my life if I had the right mindset. As I probed a little deeper into my own attitude audit, I realized that my problem was that I had the wrong perspective. Instead of dwelling on the problems, I needed to trust patiently that God would work out His plan in my current situation. He has never failed me yet, so why would He fail me now!
Audit day came and went. Everything turned out fine with our books – just some minor adjustments to make. It felt so good to know everything was in order. In a more personal way, it felt even better to pinpoint the places my attitude needed adjustment and correct it. Perspective can change everything.
What about you? Have you had an attitude audit lately?

Love,

Mama
