The Broken Mailbox

Matthew 7:24, 26 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.”  “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.”

Living in a rural area sometimes brings about winter nuisances. As I slowly and cautiously drove to work last week through the newly fallen snow, I noticed right away that it had happened again – the snowplow had knocked our office’s rural mailbox down. Grrrr!
This unfortunate and all too familiar mishap means that the post office will not be delivering our mail for a while – until we can get our mailbox reattached to the post. Oh, the mail will sit in our local post office, but I will need to take the extra effort to stop in and get it until we can replace the broken mailbox post. This will now be a crucial part of my job description if we don’t want to miss any important correspondence.
This got me thinking about an important letter that has been sent to each of us. God, through His Holy Spirit, inspired men to write His message to the world. In a period of approximately 1600 years, over 40 different men from all walks of life penned the 66 books that make up God’s letter, the Bible.  By reading His Word we can know Him, His gift of salvation. and how He wants us to live.
Why then are there so many who do not get the message in cultures where the Bible is readily available? Is it because they have a broken mailbox?
Many choose not to read it. They leave the letter sitting in the post office and never take the time to stop by, pick it up, and open it. Others open and read it once in a while but because they don’t understand it they put it aside for another time. Still others read the letter, but don’t like what it says. They are convicted of sin that they don’t want to give up, so they choose to ignore the message and keep living the way they want to. What a shame that the most important message containing words of life, words of warning, and words of wisdom often sits languishing in the post office!
Matthew 7 calls the person who hears God’s words and acts upon them a wise man. He is compared to a someone who builds his house on a rock. When the rain falls, the floods come, and the winds blow, his house is secure because he read the letter and acted on it. He will be safe because he believed God’s words and allowed them to make a difference in his life.
Yet the man who ignores God’s message is called a fool. He is compared to someone who builds his house on the sand. When the rain, floods, and winds come his house will not stand. Because he ignores God’s words, his life will crumble and he will experience God’s judgment.
The Bible is a letter we all need to read and obey. Don’t miss out on God’s important correspondence because of a broken mailbox.  Do the wise thing – stop by the post office and pick up your mail.

Love,

Mama
