Hebrews 12:7 “Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons.”
Dear Kids,
One of my favorite old-time country songs is Daddy’s Hands by Holly Dunn. There is something so sentimental and comforting in her description of her father’s hands that just plucks at the heartstrings.
Dad and sweet Abigail. |
From the lyrics, you get the impression that this father was a strong, hardworking man of faith with a deep love for his family. His self-sacrificing devotion to his children sometimes caused him to take actions that were not always pleasant and easy depending on the circumstances. Yet even when correction was needed, he always had the best interest of his children in mind.
The chorus is as follows:
Daddy’s hands were soft and kind when I was crying.
Daddy’s hands were strong as steel when I did wrong.
Daddy’s hands weren’t always gentle,
But I’ve come to understand.
There was always love in Daddy’s hands.
Though this song is about a human father, I can’t help but think of our heavenly Father. He is a Father Who is infinitely loving and kind. Psalm 139 says that His thoughts of His children outnumber the grains of sand at the seashore. He is near to the brokenhearted and He comforts those who are sorrowing, wiping away the tears from their eyes.
Yet He is also a Father Who will discipline those He loves. Even as a good human father has hands of steel when his child has done wrong, so our heavenly Father disciplines us for our good so that we may share in His holiness. This instruction, though painful at times, produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
We may not always understand the difficult things we are asked to endure in this life. But we can be assured that through it all we have an all-wise and all-powerful Father watching over us. And one thing is certain no matter our circumstances – there is always perfect, never-ending love in our Daddy’s hands!
Love,
Mama
