Alone in the Rose Garden

Matthew 14:23 “After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone.”
In this fast paced world there are not many opportunities to be alone. It seems we are always rushing off to the next activity with all the bluster of a whirlwind blowing autumn leaves from a tree. Even when we do capture a few solitary moments, it is usually punctuated by beeps and dings from our digital devices.
In the midst of all this activity it is so important to find those moments of silence. These times without distraction are essential to growing deep in our relationship with the Lord. Even Jesus, the Son of God, carved time out of His busy schedule to send the crowds away, climb a high mountain, and spend some quality time with His Father in heaven.
It is during these times that we can hear God speak to us. It is during these times that He can calm our fears and heal our broken places. It is during these times that we can share our deepest needs and experience His perfect peace.
Over the years I have had numerous people tell me that one of their favorite old hymns is In the Garden. This gospel song was written by C. Austin Miles in 1912. As he took time to be alone with his Savior, his thoughts led him to write the following the words:

I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear,
falling on my ear,
The Son of God discloses.

CHORUS:
And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

 He speaks, and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody
that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

 I’d stay in the garden with Him
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go;
through the voice of woe,
His voice to me is calling.
Those who have experienced the joy of spending time alone with their Savior can fully appreciate the sentiment in this hymn. Though the world may be falling apart around them, they can stand firm because the roots of their faith in God have grown deeper as they have taken the time to know Him more fully.When was the last time you spent time alone with God? How about today? Turn off the cell phone and escape the fast-paced life for a little while.  Jesus did it regularly, so why not you?

Love,

Mama
