A Whole New World

A Whole New World

Psalm 19:9-10 “The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgements of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.”

Every once in a while people find out about a hidden resource that was right under their nose and yet they never knew about it. What a blessing to discover this treasure. Yet what a waste to have had access for so long without taking advantage of it.
After having lived in our small town for nearly 22 years, I recently discovered a whole new world. Last week Dad and I took a bike ride into town and decided to return home by a different route. As we were pedaling down a scenic road we came to the entrance of a local gravel pit. We had known this was located just outside our town for many years but had never visited the spot, so Dad and I took a detour.
We entered the wide open gates and followed the little path until it opened up into a huge area where there were mines tunneling under the earth. There were huge piles of gravel and large equipment occupying a great canyon-like space. It was like a another whole world, yet only a few miles from our home. We could hardly believe we had never seen this before. For the people who had owned the farmland under which this natural resource was hidden it must have been a great joy to discover underground treasure.
It got me thinking about another treasure that is readily available to all of us. God’s Word holds all the guidance that we need for life. The law of the LORD is perfect and able to restore the soul. It speaks about God’s forgiveness for sin made available through Jesus’s death and resurrection. Even the very young and simple can experience the mercy that God has to give.
Its precepts teach all we need for Godly living. As we follow these commandments we will have reason to rejoice because we will be kept from making wrong decisions and suffering the consequences. Through God’s word we learn to fear Him which is the beginning of wisdom.
We also learn about God’s judgments. They are always true and righteous. Nothing is hidden from His eyes and escapes His perfect judgment. Yet God has made a way for us to escape. Through reading His law God’s children are warned of impending punishment. And for those who choose to obey there is great reward.
How many of us would benefit from searching God’s holy book regularly? If we did we would be comforted by His promises, warned of our wrong attitudes and actions, and assured of His great love for us. Yet so many of us have this treasure right under our nose and we do not access it and take advantage of all that is written there.
Gravel may be important for things like building roads, producing concrete, and manufacturing glass, but it is nothing compared to the riches hidden in God’s word. The Psalmist says that the Scripture is even more desirable than fine gold and sweeter than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
We have this heavenly resource right at our fingertips! Let’s take a detour from our normal route today and discover what God has to say. We may just uncover a whole new world.

Love,

Mama
