From Nobody to Somebody

Exodus 4:10 “But Moses pleaded with the Lord, I’m not a good speaker. I never have been, and I’m not now, even after you have spoken to me. I’m clumsy with words.”

God loves to use people despite their inadequacies and weaknesses if they are willing to turn their lives completely over to Him. We see this over and over again in the Scripture. In doing this He shows Himself strong on their behalf and gets all the glory for the work that is done.

Moses is a prime example of this. Just about everyone in the world has heard the name of Moses. He was the great leader who stood before the mighty Pharaoh of Egypt and demanded he let God’s people go from their slavery. He is the one who stood on the banks of the Red Sea with the staff of the Lord in his hand while the waters parted so the Israelites could cross to the other side. He is the one who struck the rock in the wilderness that brought forth water. And he is the friend of God who stood on Mt. Sinai to receive the ten commandments.

You might expect God to use a strong and powerful leader like Moses – except that Moses was not all these things on his own.

Moses was born to an Israelite family in a very dangerous time. The Pharaoh had made a law commanding that all male Israelite babies must be thrown into the Nile River. Through the wisdom of his mother, the courage of his sister, and the grace of the God of heaven he was rescued from certain death by the Pharoah’s own daughter who adopted him and raised him as her own son.

Moses had every reason to be confident in his abilities and position, but he was a man without a true identity. He was not an Egyptian by birth and he identified more with the Hebrew people. But they did not trust him. In a strange turn of events Moses ended up murdering an Egyptian slave driver who was beating one of the Hebrew slaves. Word of his crime got out and he had to flee to the desert of Midian for his life.

In a brief period of time he went from a somebody to a nobody. For forty years he kept sheep in the backside of a hot desert. His heart had been for God and God’s people, but during those forty years I can imagine he had plenty of time to consider how he had blown it. His self-confidence dropped very low.

But God wasn’t finished with him yet. One day Moses saw an amazing sight. A bush caught on fire in the hot desert heat. Moses moved closer to see this strange bush that crackled with rising flames but did not burn up. From the burning bush God spoke to him.

After revealing Himself God told Moses that He had chosen him to go to Pharaoh and tell him to let the Hebrew children go free. Moses panicked. He pleaded with the Lord, “I’m not a good speaker. I never have been, and I’m not now, even after you have spoken to me. I’m clumsy with words.” In a very candid conversation Moses laid out all his insecurities before the Lord and the Lord responded with the promise of His presence and help.

Finally, Moses believed and acted on his belief. He went to Pharaoh and the rest of the story is history. Despite his past mistakes, his weaknesses, and inadequacies God did an amazing work in and through him. In surrendering his life fully to the Lord, Moses became known as a friend of God and the humblest man who ever lived.

May we all be encouraged as we look at our own mistakes and downfalls. Turn them all over to God. Surrender your life to His perfect plan. Wait to see what He does. You may be the next person God calls for an important job!

Love,

Mama
