Don’t Dehydrate – Drink Deeply!

Acts 20:32 “Now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”

Dehydration does bad things to your body. I found this out the hard way. This past winter I did not drink enough water and I experienced all sorts of unpleasant side effects. My hair and nails got dry and brittle, my joints began to ache, my eyes had trouble focusing, and my skin felt rough and flaky. I had no idea that all of these symptoms came from lack of water, but once I figured it out I began to drink more.

I quickly realized that it was not enough to chug a large glass full only once in a while. My body was so devoid of liquid that drinking large amounts sporadically didn’t do the job. The liquid seemed to run right through. It wasn’t until I consistently began to drink at regular intervals that my body began to hydrate and I started to feel better.

There are many things in life that need to be done on a regular basis. It wouldn’t be prudent to eat a huge meal once a week and fast the rest of the time. In the same way it is not profitable to exercise strenuously once a month and be a couch potato for the remaining weeks. The effort expended would be wasted. These things are meant to be done on a regular and consistent basis.

Bible reading and study is another area where it is crucial to be consistent. Just sitting in church once a week is not going to be enough to sustain you through the difficulties life has to bring. When you are not soaking in God’s Words daily, then often the preacher’s Sunday message will run in one ear and out the other without having a lasting effect. However, when you have hydrated your heart and mind with the Scripture during the week, the words spoken on the Lord’s Day will only heighten the impact of the message you have received all week long.

Just as dehydration is bad for your physical body, dehydration from lack of God’s Word also has a negative impact on your soul. Paul warned the Ephesian elders that they should guard themselves against false teachers and errant teachings. He warned that there would be leaders who would come into their midst like savage wolves seeking to destroy the faith of many. He informed them that even from their number men would arise who would distort the truth in order to draw disciples away from Christ.Paul understood that the way to guard against these heresies was for believers to drench themselves regularly with the truth of God’s Word. That is why he committed his brothers and sisters in Christ to God and to the word of grace which could build them up and give them an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. The protection for standing firm in the truth was based upon regular reading and understanding of the Scriptures. This practice would help them recognize Satan’s lies and guard them from faltering in their faith when they heard false teaching.

Dehydration does bad things to your body. If you want to make sure you don’t suffer from a critical depletion of fluids, drink plenty of liquids regularly. And as H2O is to your physical body, God’s Word is to your spiritual soul.

So grab a nice, cold, and refreshing glass of water along with your Bible. Drink deeply of both and they will keep your joints from aching, your soul from becoming dry, and your eyes from losing focus of the truth.

Love,

Mama
