I Don’t Care What You Think!

1 Corinthians 2:4-5 “And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.”

Do you make decisions based on what other people might think? Most of us do. Whether it is what we say, or where we go, or what we wear, often our first thought is, “How will others perceive this?” This is not usually the best way to make decisions.

Recently I have been riding my bicycle to work. Our office is now closer to home and it is possible to do this. I cannot believe the benefits of this 15 minute ride every day. I feel much healthier and have more focus as I complete my daily tasks. But I have run into a problem. After pedaling hard and enjoying the cool breeze, I arrive at work with perspiration on my face and my hair disheveled. Yikes! What will people think?
Despite the benefits of this healthy activity, I actually considered giving it up – not because it was a good idea, but because I was concerned about the impression it would give to those who saw me less than put together.
The Apostle Paul was not concerned about the opinion of others. The only person he cared to please was God. Whatever he did, he did it heartily as unto the Lord and not unto men. He went where God told him to go, spoke what God told him to speak, and acted in the way that would give God glory, never thinking twice about people’s opinions.
He wrote in his letter to the Corinthians, “My message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.” He was not trying to impress anyone with his amazing abilities and didn’t craft his words so that he could look good. His goal was to speak the truth clearly, allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to do a work of faith in peoples’ hearts.
In today’s vernacular the Apostle Paul was not writing sensational blog posts in order to get as many “hits” and “followers” as possible. If his words (which incidentally did eventually go viral) were to make any impact on people, he wanted it to be in demonstration of the power of God and not because of his own persuasive powers.
Paul made the right decision when it came to what people would think. He did the appropriate thing and didn’t worry about being judged by others. God blessed his choices and untold millions have come to faith in Jesus Christ through Paul’s testimony.
Now, if we could all just develop that mindset, there would be a lot more good decisions being made. Whether it is related to serving God or just living our daily life we would do well to stop worrying about how other people feel about our choices.
I guess I’ll start by continuing to ride my bike to work. Oh, and by the way – if you see that my face is shiny and my hair is windblown, I don’t care what you think. Why? Because I feel great!

Love,

Mama
