Finding the Road Home

Exodus 13:21 “The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.”

Have I ever told any of you that I am terrible at directions? No matter how hard I try I always pick the wrong direction. That is why I rely heavily on my GPS. Siri and I are the closest of friends when it comes to finding my way. I trust her completely.
Just yesterday I was traveling through a neighboring town that I do not visit often. I asked Siri to take me home and she kindly began directing me. As I blindly followed her lead she took me through a very unfamiliar area and I was completely lost. Though I started to have some doubts about her wisdom, there was nothing left to do but continue to follow her guidance. Much to my relief, in twenty minutes I finally recognized where I was. It wasn’t the route I was expecting but a back way that took me right where I needed to go. Once again, I was so glad my good friend knew where she was going because I sure didn’t!
This is the way it is with God’s people. When we give our lives over to the Lord we start out on a life journey. Even if we think we know where we are going we will very likely be surprised. The key is to listen carefully to His guiding and trust Him fully. There will be times when it may seem that we are headed in the wrong direction, but the Lord is so much more trustworthy and wise than Siri. He knows the best path to bring us safely home.
When the children of Israel left the land of Egypt they had no idea how to escape the hard-hearted Pharaoh or where they should make their new home. They had been slaves for four hundred years, so the idea of making it on their own must have been intimidating. But God did not leave them lost on some back road. He directed them with a cloud by day and a fire by night. All they had to do was follow.
God does not usually lead us with a cloud or fire these days, but He orchestrates our circumstances to teach us to trust Him. Each new day is just another opportunity to seek His guidance and trust His provision.  When we find ourselves on a road that we were not expecting or that we may not want to travel, we must trust Him confidently. He knows exactly where He is taking us even when we don’t and  He will bring us safely home.
In the journey of life you don’t need to be afraid if you are terrible at directions. Just make sure you are following the voice of the One Who is so much more reliable than even Siri. He will get you safely home.

Love,

Mama
