The Greatest Architect

John 15:16 “You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.”

Deep down in each person’s heart there is a desire to leave behind a legacy. Though each of us is involved daily with life’s mundane circumstances, we hope that the seeds we plant will make a difference in others’ lives. Truly our attitudes and actions do affect others, but when it is all said and done, will the fruit our lives produce remain?
I knew I was a tad underdressed the moment I stepped through the doorway of the fancy banquet room in Springfield, Ohio. The glittery dresses, high heeled shoes, black suits, and ties mocked my plain black pants and pink sweater. The long tables in the entryway were spread with cheeses, colorful fruits, and crackers, and waiters threaded their way through the crowds carrying platters of tasty hors d’oeuvres. All in attendance at this beautiful dinner and evening out were there to remember a man who had spent his life working to leave behind a legacy.
Frank Lloyd Wright, dubbed the most famous American architect of all time, accomplished much in his ninety-one years. He designed more than one thousand structures, which included numerous types of buildings. One of these was the Wescott House located in Springfield, Ohio. We had been invited to this dinner in part to honor the man’s life as well as to help raise funds for continued restoration and maintenance of this landmark home. As the evening progressed we learned much about this famous man, his desire to create beautiful space for people to enjoy, and his desire to be remembered.
This talented architect accomplished what he endeavored to do. He left behind a myriad of appealing structures, but unfortunately time and weather have been an enemy, constantly seeking to destroy what he worked so hard to build. Even with the help of some dedicated followers and wealthy contributors who have sought to preserve his work, none of Frank Lloyd Wright’s projects will endure for eternity.
Those who are Christians can leave behind a different type of legacy – one that lasts forever.  The Bible calls it fruit. Jesus has chosen us and appointed us to bear this lasting fruit. He is not talking about buildings, academic achievements, or the memory of great feats. Each of these things will be forgotten over time. The fruit He wants us to produce is an abundance of changed lives – ours and those we touch. As we pray for the Holy Spirit to work in and through us, others will see our love and come to recognize Jesus as the Savior. They will believe and develop a faith that will remain strong even though the winds of adversity may blow. These new believers will then begin to share the message of God’s salvation producing even more fruit.
This is the type of legacy that we should desire to leave. It can be fulfilled by even the most ordinary of people doing the most menial of jobs. When we allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with His power and live a life that is honoring to God, others will see it. Our words and actions will be seeds that blossom and produce a harvest that lasts forever.
What kind of legacy do you hope to leave behind? If you are only looking to achieve earthly goals, then you will be disappointed. Eventually these accomplishments will fade away even if there is a group of dedicated followers trying to preserve your contributions.Instead, put your labors towards building God’s heavenly kingdom. He, the greatest architect of all time, has created loads of space in heaven for all who will believe in Jesus. He has chosen and appointed you to share the message. This is a legacy or fruit that will remain for eternity.

Love,

Mama
