2 Chronicles 20:6 “. . . and [Jehoshaphat] said, ‘O Lord, the God of our fathers, are You not God in the heavens? Are you not ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against you.’”

Have you ever noticed how superheroes are all the rage?
All through time we have created great and powerful men and women who have stepped into desperate situations to save the day. We love to read about them, write about them, watch movies about them, and dress up like them. From Superman, to Batman, to Spiderman, to Wonder Woman, we yearn to see them outwit or overpower the enemy.
I believe this fascination comes from a real need for deliverance from evil and humanity’s desire to have someone to turn to in times of great need. Unfortunately the superheroes we create in our minds cannot truly offer any help for our real life problems.
Just the other day I was watching a movie preview and I was amazed at the types of horrors that were threatening to undo the unsuspecting victims. Then, as always, from some remote place a muscle-rippled champion showed up and slashed and punched his way to victory. Wow! What a relief!
But then I started thinking about the scenario more clearly.
“Really! Is it even remotely possible for a mere human, no matter how ripped he is, to fight against these horrifying creatures? There is NO ONE who would have enough power, strength, or wit to escape alive – let alone save a whole city!
Yet real life crises require a real life Champion!
Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, knew the need for a strong deliverer. A number of rival countries joined forces and came to make war against him and his people. When he received the report that a great multitude of enemy warriors were coming against him, he knew he was in trouble. His blood ran cold as he thought of the dire consequences of such an attack.
He knew he needed a hero to step in and save the day, so he turned his attention to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. The whole country gathered together, and Jehoshaphat stood before them and prayed, “O Lord, the God of our fathers, are You not God in the heavens? Are you not ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against you.’”
Jehoshaphat knew that the Lord Jehovah was a real life champion. He had protected and defended His people in the past. He was the Lord of the earth and of the heavens, the Ruler over all nations – even those who were coming to attack. He had more than enough of the wisdom, power, and might that was needed and NO ONE could stand against Him! Though King Jehoshaphat was himself powerless against the enemy, he had confidence that his God would show up to rescue them.
Jehoshaphat was not disappointed. While he and the nation sang songs of praise, the Lord set an ambush against the enemy, causing the opposing armies to destroy each other completely. (You can read the whole story in 2 Chronicles 20.) Not only was the nation saved, but Judah collected much wealth from the spoil.
I know we will probably always love to watch movies in which our superheroes save the day. But when it comes to real life predicaments, Spiderman is just not going to get the job done.
When you desperately need someone to come to the rescue, turn your eyes to the Lord of all the heavens and the earth. He has infinite power and might in His hand and NO ONE can stand a chance when He shows up!
