Invisible Ink

This post is shared by Angela Henderson who is a mother of three, a middle school English teacher and a special aunt. Thanks Aunt Angela for sharing your thoughts today. 🙂

Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”

photoHaving artistic, creative friends inspires me. Such is the case with my college friend Haley Jo. Recently, she sent us handmade postcards with beautifully designed pictures, script, and, best of all, hidden messages. Using invisible ink, she embedded words personalized to each one of us that we can only see with a special flash light. The kids and I had fun searching our card to discover words popping out at us in that light.

As we enjoyed this activity as a family, I began to think how this card illustrates an important truth in our lives: just because we cannot see something plainly, doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Take for example the story of Elisha and the chariots of fire. When Elisha was under attack by the king of Aram’s army with horses and chariots, Elisha’s servant came running fearfully to him saying, “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” Yet, in this seemingly impossible situation, Elisha calmly replied, “Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

Umm . . . at this point I’m pretty sure the servant would like to have done a math lesson with his master, but time did not allow! Thankfully, Elisha went on to explain – or I should say, to pray. And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see. Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” (2 Kings 6)

What was invisible to Elisha’s servant was always there. Now he had eyes to see it. So often we fight battles and in our limitations, we can only see the obstacles. Fear, discouragement, and even defeat can overwhelm us . . . unless we are able to hold all of those up to the Lord and let his special light shine on them, revealing much more. In His light, we can know His presence, see His promises, and stand firm on His unfailing truths such as:

“Never will I leave you;

Never will I forsake you.

So we say with confidence,

‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?'”

And just in case we are tempted to think, “Well, that happened to Elisha, but who am I?”, He goes on to say, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13) Our Saviour, Jesus Christ, is ready to reveal Himself to His servants TODAY.

My beautiful postcard still sits on my nightstand. Anyone can enjoy the pictures and script, but I enjoy knowing what lies beneath it. What a lovely reminder that in any situation we face today, God’s light helps us see His personal messages and powerful help ready for us, His servants.

Love,

Aunt Angela
