Dear Sugarland – Yes, There Is Something More!

Dear Sugarland,

Recently I was listening to one of your popular songs, Something More,” and my heart was heavy. I sensed the frustration that many feel living a life of predictable patterns. We all go through the routine of getting up each morning, heading off to work or school, and struggling through days where everything seems to go wrong. From time to time we have all staggered under the weight of disappointment for not being appreciated for our efforts. Yet we continue on day after day until we fear we will collapse from utter burnout. This is the moment when many voice your exact thoughts, “There’s got to be something more!”

Who wants to live a life of monotony going through the daily, machine-like motions if there isn’t something more to live for? Everyone longs for a little less heartache and a little more bliss.

I have some good news for you! There is something more than this life of routine, but you are looking for it in the wrong places. You say you are going to take your chances looking for this elusive meaning to life, but quitting your job and engaging in all sorts of “bucket list” activities before you die is not the answer. Sure, you can create a brief time slot of happiness doing all the things you long to do, but what happens when you get older even if you have accomplished all you wanted to? Then what?

I would like to suggest that there is more than this life we live here on earth – much more! It is not found through activity, status, or fame. It is not attained through exhilarating experiences or huge bank accounts. There are many in the poorest parts of the world with much less money and opportunity than we have who live it. The meaning of this life is found in a relationship.

We were created to live for the only One who deserves all we have to offer. He is Someone Who loves us deeply and sacrificed His own life so we could have ours. In His own words He “came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” All the activities you so much want to experience are gifts of this One and meant to be experienced with Him. He never leaves us or forsakes us, He gives meaning to even the most monotonous of jobs, He provides for our needs, He gives us the rest we so desperately need, and most of all He has provided a perfect place for us to live with Him forever when this life on earth is over. No more traffic jams, no more boss men, no more dirty houses – just joy and bliss that is found only through His presence.

You can’t have this blessing as you are now. Sin, which is the cause for all that is wrong in this world, keeps us from our Heavenly Father. But He has made a way to remedy this. He came to earth and took the penalty for the world’s sin on Himself. He died and rose again so that all who believe in Him can experience new life.

By accepting God’s gracious gift of His Son you will be assured of a right relationship with God. Then regardless of how life on this earth treats you, you will understand that this life is not all there is. You will not be alone in the difficult times, you will find meaning in the monotonous times, and you will have the sure hope of heaven to look forward to.

You’ve wondered through the words of your song, Something More, the very thing that most of the world is wondering. I am so glad to tell you, “Yes, there is something more – much more!”

Love,

Mama

“Something More”  by Sugarland

Monday, hard to wake up
Fill my coffee cup, I’m out the door
Yeah, the freeway’s standing still today
It’s gonna make me late, and thats for sure
I’m running out of gas and out of time
Never gonna make it there by nine

[Chorus:]
There’s gotta be something more
Gotta be more than this
I need a little less hard time
I need a little more bliss
I’m gonna take my chances
Taking a chance I might
Find what I’m looking for
There’s gotta be something more

Five years and there’s no doubt
That I’m burnt out, I’ve had enough
So now boss man, here’s my two weeks
I’ll make it short and sweet, so listen up
I could work my life away, but why?
I got things to do before I die

[Repeat Chorus]

Some believe in destiny, and some believe in fate
I believe that happiness is something we create
You best believe that I’m not gonna wait
‘Cause there’s gotta be something more

I get home 7:30 the house is dirty, but it can wait
Yeah, ’cause right now I need some downtime
To drink some red wine and celebrate
Armageddon could be knocking at my door
But I ain’t gonna answer that’s for sure.
There’s gotta be something!

[Repeat Chorus]
