A Magic Carpet Ride

2 Timothy 1:12 “For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.”

Trust is something that everyone everywhere displays in one way or another. When I sit down on a chair, I trust that it will not break. When I eat my food, I trust it isn’t contaminated. When I dial my cell phone, I trust I will reach the person on the other end. Even though I don’t understand the mechanics of all these things, I have confidence that everything will be fine. But when it comes to putting my life on the line, I carefully consider the integrity, strength, and ability of the person to whom I will entrust my greatest possession.

In light of this I find it interesting that Disney’s Princess Jasmine chose to commit her life to a wild street urchin. Jasmine is tired of being cooped up and protected in the royal palace, and desires to sneak away into the real world. By chance she encounters a young man with special powers gifted to him by a genie whom he released from a bottle. The empowered Aladdin tries to woo the beautiful princess to take a ride on his flying carpet with tales of a whole new world beyond the confines of the palace. In a life-changing moment he holds out his hand and says, “Do you trust me?” Tentatively Jasmine grasps his hand, steps onto the carpet, and they soar off into the sky singing a beautiful love duet together.

Do you trust me?

Disney’s Aladdin

Regardless of whether or not Aladdin was worthy of her trust, Jasmine chose to embark on a journey she didn’t fully understand. Chances are she had no idea how a thin piece of Oriental rug could fly through the air. Despite her lack of knowledge on the subject, she took Aladdin’s hand and believed in him.aladdin-disneyscreencaps-com-6779

There are often things in life that are unexplainable from a human perspective. People die suddenly without warning. Natural disasters damage property and claim thousands of unsuspecting lives. Childhood illness, third world starvation, unjust rulers, persecution, and more sicken us. When we consider these things, it is tempting to wonder about God and His trustworthiness. How could he allow these things to happen? Can I trust Him?

There were many things about the Apostle Paul’s personal circumstances that he probably did not understand either, but he was not ashamed. While sitting in a filthy prison cell waiting to die, he confidently wrote, “For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.”

So when you are struggling with your understanding of the world or your circumstances and it seems like life is a crazy risk on a flying carpet, picture the Lord holding out His nail-scarred hand. Listen to His kind voice saying, “Dear one, there are many things you can’t apprehend. But do you trust Me?”

Love,
Mama
