Encouraging A Sensible Young Man

Titus 2:6 “Likewise urge the young men to be sensible . . .”

Dear Kids,

Yesterday was a big day! John-Keith had a birthday and this year he turned twenty-one. Twenty-one is the year a kid is officially considered an adult. It is the year one’s driver’s license is printed sideways instead of up and down. It is the year of new beginnings and greater responsibilities. Congratulations, John-Keith! You made it!

Bible Wisdom to Guide Your Path

Now that you are on to bigger and better things I want to remind you of some Bible wisdom to guide your path. In his letter to Titus, Paul gives warnings about deceptive teachers who would try to push their agenda. To counteract these teachings Paul gives instructions on how God’s children should respond.

Older men have a responsibility to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in their faith, in their love and in perseverance. Older women have similar encouragement and are also instructed to teach the younger women how to behave appropriately in their stage of life. He then urges young men to be sensible in all they do.

Be Sensible and Aware of the World Around You

Even though a youth passes a certain year and into adulthood, it doesn’t necessarily mean he has his wits about him. To be sensible means to keep aware of all that is going on around you and to practice good judgment in your decisions. This is crucial in a world that is constantly pulling towards ungodly activities and motivations. Someone who continually follows the truth and keeps alert to discrepancies will protect himself from the pitfalls of unwise decisions.

This kind of young man will also show himself to be a good example to those around him. By always doing what is right, keeping himself pure, focusing on the truth, and using speech that is beyond reproach he will put any opponents of godly living to shame. Though they may try to malign him, there will be no truth to their words. And in so doing he may give courage to others who also want to follow a straight path.

Follow God Throughout All of Life

Twenty-one years ago yesterday was a special day for Dad and me. God gave us a super special gift and we are so grateful. But we are even more blessed to see the man you have become. In this year of new beginnings and greater responsibilities, you will come against many new experiences. As Paul urged Titus,

I urge you to be a sensible young man . . . and follow God to each future birthday!

I am proud of you!

Love,

Mama
