Immutable: A Comforting Vocabulary Word For 2021

January 5, 2021 By Sandra Sheridan 3 Comments

Psalm 102:25-27 “Of old You founded the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. Even they will perish, but You endure; And all of them will wear out like a garment; Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed. But You are the same.”

Our Immutable Changeless God

Dear Kids,

This time last year none of us had any idea what we would face in a couple of short months. Who knew all the changes that would occur in our workplaces, social settings, and lifestyles in general? But time marches on and here we are again on the cusp of another 365-day cycle. The year 2021 is sure to bring more unexpected changes. But there is no need to fear the future when there is an unchanging God to hold us fast.

I have always enjoyed words. Very early in my life, language and vocabulary fascinated me. I remember receiving my first dictionary. The bright red cover labeled with gold lettering, The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, became one of my favorite books. I often found myself looking through it just to discover new ways of expressing myself. This same volume still sits on my bookshelf behind my desk.

Immutable: A Fancy Word for Unchangeable

One of the big words found in my dictionary is immutable. The word is fancy but the meaning is simple. Something that is immutable is unchangeable or changeless. This is an attribute of our God. Although the heavens and the earth may change and even perish, God remains the same.

Our circumstances may change, our loved ones disappoint, our world teeter on the brink of the unknown. But there is Someone Who forever remains the same. Even we as individuals are constantly developing, learning, and growing older, but the Lord never changes. He is absolute perfection and cannot get any better or worse. His purposes are sure, and He will bring to pass all He has planned. His promises are reliable and we can rest assured He will follow through with everything He says.

A Comforting Vocabulary Word For the Year 2021

The New Year has made its grand entrance. We are all hoping life will finally settle down and we can get back to business as usual. But even if our circumstances throw us more unexpected changes we don’t need to panic. The One Who founded the heavens and the earth will always be the same. Let the unchangeable God hold you fast as you face the upcoming year. He is forever immutable – and that’s a comforting vocabulary word to tightly hang on to in the year 2021!

Getting on the Right Train – An Effective Response to Anxiety

November 13, 2020 By Sandra Sheridan 2 Comments

Psalm 148:13 “Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven.”

An Effective Response to Anxiety

Dear Kids,

2020 has been a year of increased anxiety for many people. We live in stressful times, but soon after this year made its grand entrance the pressures only increased. COVID restrictions, unfamiliar work and social conditions, and an unprecedented election are only a few of the abnormal circumstances we’ve navigated. All of this, melded together with personal struggles and fear of the unknown, lends itself to sleepless nights, tension headaches, high blood pressure, and a general feeling of unease. But late one night as I tossed and turned, my head swirling like a tornado, I suddenly realized a good way to respond to my anxiety.

“What If” and “What Was” Questions Create Anxiety

As I reviewed my apprehensive contemplations I began to understand that most of them pertained to two trains of thought. The first related to “what if” questions. What if this happens? Or what if that doesn’t come through? Most, if not all, of these ideas were only speculation and not based on anything solid. But once I allowed my mind to board that train, the panicky thoughts came faster and faster until I had worked myself into a tizzy.

The next damaging train of thought had to do with “what was” reflections. “I wish it was like it was before.” “Those days went by so fast, and I wish I could have some of them back.” “Maybe if I had done things differently we would be in a better place.” This mindset also caused consternation and added to the swirl of emotions keeping me wide-awake.

Focus on “What is” With Thankfulness

Once I understood the trains of thought that were taking me on a wild ride of anxiety, I decided I better get off before my mind and body collapsed under the pressure. It was time to change my thought patterns and focus on healthy and life-giving truth. That’s when I decided to concentrate on “what is” in my life. There are so many things for which to be thankful; so many reasons to praise God. I must choose to fill my mind with these.

Psalm 148 calls us along with all creation to praise God. Part of praise is thankfulness. By thanking Him for “what is” in my life I diffuse the confusing torrent of “what ifs” and “what was” thoughts that produce such great anxiety. The Lord knows the future and has it under control. He also understands the past and walked with me through every circumstance. So there’s no point in second-guessing. It’s time to leave that behind. But “what is” is where I can find relief and peace.

Thankfulness is an Effective Response to Anxiety

There’s no denying it, we live in a stressful world filled with many anxiety-inducing situations. So what train are you on? If you find yourself moving at tremendous speeds on the “What if” or the “What was” Express, then disembark as quickly as you can. Refocus your thoughts on praising God. Soon you’ll find that gratitude for “what is” replaces uneasiness with peace. And thankfulness is a very effective response to anxiety.

Mama

What’s Really Behind Your Mask?

September 25, 2020 By Sandra Sheridan 1 Comment

Jeremiah 17:9-10a “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? I the LORD search the heart . . .” (NIV)

Dear Kids,

What's Really Behind Your Mask?

What’s Really Behind Your Mask?

We now live in a world where masks are an everyday reality. Every time you engage with someone – whether at work, school, or store – everyone wears a mask to protect themselves and others. But is this really very different than what has always been?

The other day I took my weekly grocery shopping trip into town. While in the store I ran into four people I thought I knew. I didn’t recognize any of them at first because half of their face was covered, but after scrutinizing their other physical characteristics, even one person’s sandaled feet, I realized they were acquaintances. It took some time and effort to recognize these individuals because I couldn’t see an important part of their face.

Creativity With Your Masks

Since the mandate to mask up, I’ve also noticed a wide variety of creativity. I’ve come across big toothy smiley faces, scary monster grimaces, animal snouts, and masks with various messages. Each of these is meant to draw attention to the wearer and evoke some sort of response, but no one really knows the true sentiment behind the cloth cover.

This may seem like a new and strange development in our COVID-19 world, but people have been masking up for years. Some of the seemingly happiest people I’ve known have struggled with debilitating depression within the recesses of their inner self. Other ultra-charismatic people sometimes have ulterior motives. Their smooth and well-timed words may be meant to induce the response they want from the hearer. What we initially see in people is not always the truth of their character.

God Sees Behind Your Mask

Although we can’t always discern what’s behind the masks people wear, there is Someone Who can. God is not fooled by a laughing face cover trying to disguise tears. Likewise, He never capitulates to smooth talk and calculated actions meant to use others for personal gain. He sees directly into the soul and discerns the deepest hurts and truest motives. This can be a scary thought if your heart is not right. But it is also very comforting when others don’t get you or understand your broken heart.

I’m sorry to say that for now it looks like masks are around to stay for a while. So keep your creative stash handy and available for all occasions. But while you must keep your mouth and nose covered for safety’s sake, be careful not to cover up the true sentiments of your heart. Friends and family may not always see the real you, but there is Someone who does. And not even a mask will fool Him.

Love,

Mama

How to Attain Unwavering Faith

August 27, 2020 By Sandra Sheridan 1 Comment

Psalm 26:1b “ . . . I have trusted in the LORD without wavering.”

Dear Kids,

The Bible tells us numerous times that the righteous will live by faith, and that by faith the men of old gained approval. In today’s verse the Psalmist boasted that he had unwavering faith in the Lord. This is the kind of faith we must have too. But how does a person get it?

Do you have unwavering faith?

If you are like me, you would probably say you have faith that God is Who He says He is. You would also believe and profess that He keeps His promises. But sometimes when it comes down to real life experiences do you ever feel a little shaky in your understanding of all that’s happening around you? Do you ever wonder how the future is going to pan out regarding personal trials or even worldwide occurrences like COVID, elections, natural disasters and more?

I expect I am not alone in my swirl of emotions over various recent life events. But even when circumstances lend toward inner havoc how do we keep our heart and mind in the right place? How do we make sure we trust the LORD without wavering? The Psalmist gives some very timely thoughts.

Timely Thoughts About Attaining Faith

First, he asks God to examine and test his heart. Sometimes our emotional responses to the things around us lie. We would do well to continually request God to sort out what’s truth and what’s not. When He does, reject what is false and hold onto what is true and right.

Second, keep God’s lovingkindness before your eyes. Make this your mind’s focus instead of the unsettling details of circumstances. The great truths of God’s eternal love, mercy, and power will calm your heart and stabilize your faith.

Next, don’t sit with deceitful men or make company with evildoers. Surround yourself with those who will point you to God and encourage you in your walk of faith. Other believers will help keep you on the right path and to stand strong and unwavering.

Lastly, regularly recite how God has come through in the past. Declare His wonders to those around you. Your grateful words of thanksgiving and praise will be a needed reminder of God’s faithfulness. They will strengthen you and others as we walk this journey of faith together.

With God’s Help You Can Attain Unwavering Faith

The men and women of old were real people with real hardships just as we are. Yet they lived by faith. We are called to the same standard. So ask God to examine your heart, focus on His lovingkindness, surround yourself with the right people, and continually proclaim words of thanksgiving. Then, no matter your circumstances, your foot will stand on a level place. Like the Psalmist, you, with God’s help, can attain unwavering faith.

Worry – The Biggest Energy Waster

July 9, 2020 By Sandra Sheridan 1 Comment

Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Dear Kids,

Worry - The Biggest Energy Waster

Nathan & Dalia Sheridan

Have you ever noticed how the things you worry about the most almost never happen? In fact, the problems I encounter usually stem from situations I never gave a thought to. In the end I’ve found it is a waste of time to worry. A person can’t control everything in his or her life. Instead why not just trust the One who can!

Mishaps are a Part of Life

This past weekend our Nathan got married. For months before I spent a lot of mental energy deciding what dress to wear, hoping my shoes wouldn’t hurt my feet, fretting over the wrinkles in the tablecloths for the reception, and scores of bothersome concerns. And as usually happens when planning a wedding, a few mishaps did occur along the way.

The flowers to decorate the reception venue didn’t show up as expected. One of the bridesmaids and one of the ushers got sick. Nathan and Dalia had to change their honeymoon plans due to COVID-19. All of these glitches in the wedding preparations, while they created some frustration, worked themselves out and happily everyone adjusted and moved on. But on Wednesday of the wedding week, as I prepared to host the bride’s family, the one thing I never dreamed of happened.

The Things We Worry About Almost Never Happen

After spending the day setting tables at the reception site I ran home to make final preparations for our dinner guests. On arrival John-Keith informed me that while he was sitting at the kitchen table he heard a crash. Upon investigation he discovered, much to his surprise that our kitchen sink had fallen out of the counter. Has ANYONE in the whole world ever worried about their kitchen sink falling out of the counter on the day they are expecting a large group of people for dinner?

Thankfully, John-Keith was able to prop it back up with supports, and we enjoyed a lovely time with Dalia’s family despite this disaster. The next day a friend fixed the problem for us.

It just goes to show you that worrying is a waste of time. But it’s also a lack of faith. God tells us in His word that we should not be anxious for anything. He tells us in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, to present our requests to Him. When we do the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Unload Your Worry on God

There will always be mishaps and even a few disasters. But we are not to spend our energy worrying about them. Instead we must unload our concerns on God, and then move forward enveloped in His peace. He has control of every situation we will ever encounter. And He will help us find joy despite any misadventures.

The wedding was beautiful! Nathan beamed. Dalia was radiant! And everyone enjoyed celebrating with the happy couple. None of the frustrations dampened the day. And now we have another beautiful daughter added to our family.

So don’t bother worrying about anything – not even your kitchen sink falling out. It will probably never happen. But if you do experience any feelings of anxiety over unknown mishaps don’t waste your energy. Instead take your worries to the Lord in prayer. Recognize His complete control over all circumstances. Thank Him for His love and power. And then relax into His comforting arms of peace.

Love,
Mama

The Parade That Washed Away the Rain of A COVID-19 Graduation

June 4, 2020 By Sandra Sheridan 2 Comments

Proverbs 15:30 “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.”

It was the end of an era! Twenty-two years, five children, myriads of smiles and tears . . . This past Thursday our youngest, Abigail Sheridan, graduated from Cedarville High School. It was not at all the typical ceremony and celebration we had anticipated for her graduation day. But thanks to administrators, teachers, friends, and family the day was perfect! My heart was full with the outpouring of support. But my eyes pooled and my throat choked up especially when I saw the crowds lining the street. These spectators of our parade of cars were the icing on the cake. In fact, this parade washed away the rain of disappointment resulting from a COVID–19 graduation.

Sadness Over a COVID-19 Graduation

A COVID-19 Graduation

For days leading up to the graduation ceremony we had moments of sadness at our house. It just seemed so disappointing to have missed all the final rites of passage for Abigail, but also for Dad and me as we prepared to send our youngest out into the world. There was no prom, no tennis tournaments, no class trip, and no final goodbyes. We, too, were saying our farewells to years of involvement at a school we have loved.

Abigail chose her local siblings to join her in our van for the big day. We dressed and met with the other graduates in their vehicles at a local church parking lot. Then we started the procession to the school. My eyes fill even now thinking about all the friends and family with signs and bells waving and cheering us on. They could not attend due to the crowd restrictions, but all along Main Street their cheerful faces and effervescent enthusiasm supporting the class of 2020 was overwhelming.

We pulled our cars into the reserved spots in the school parking lot and enjoyed the event from the comfort of our vehicles. The wide screen portrayed baby pictures along-side the more recent senior portraits, as well as all speeches recorded ahead of time. When the moment came for Abigail to receive the diploma, we drove around the crowd of parked cars and stopped in front of the stage where Abigail, Dad, and I got out. She handed us carnations and we handed her the diploma as the event photographer snapped away.

Thank You Cedarville Schools

After all was over our vehicles caravanned back to the street. But the fun was not over yet. Along the final stretch of parking lot to the school’s exit fire trucks and police cars blasted their sirens to bid the class of 2020 a final farewell. Again I was overwhelmed with gratitude to all who worked so hard to make this day special!

There is a saying, “Don’t rain on my parade.” This adage pleads with nay-sayers not to ruin a good time. But in this case – at the end of this era for the Sheridan family – the parade is what washed away the rain. And I am forever grateful!

Goodbye Cedarville Schools! Thank you for everything.

Love,
Mama

Be A “Masker” – Protect Your Health, Your Heart, and Your Mind

April 16, 2020 By Sandra Sheridan Leave a Comment

Colossians 3:2 “Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.”

Dear Kids,

Protect Your Health, Heart, and Mind

Danger is always a good incentive to take extra care. The recent spread of the COVID-19 virus has gotten people doing things and not doing things they hadn’t even thought about before. That is why Abigail and I recently entered the ranks of mask-wearing patrons.

Wearing a Mask for Protection

Saturday morning Abigail and I watched a YouTube video to learn how to create our own perfect mask. We each chose a colorful bandana – I always knew these would come in handy one day – and folded it according to the simple directions. After sliding a rubber band onto each side and folding a little more we were ready to suit up and go.

I must admit the two of us had some good laughs over our fancy headgear. We even wondered if we’d actually have the nerve to go out in public wearing them. But the desire for safety finally out ruled our fear of looking foolish.

We drove to town, gathered our courage, and marched into the store on a mission. In only a few minutes I had mastered the art of keeping my eyes focused straight ahead and choosing the deserted aisles to get to where we wanted to go without being seen. Only once did Abigail and I make eye contact in the vitamin aisle and break into peals of laughter at our ridiculous new look. But fortunately nobody noticed because other than shaking shoulders we hid our mirth behind the mask. When it came time to checkout, the other “maskers” gave us the courage to act normal and do what needed to be done as quickly as possible.

Protect Your Health, Heart and Mind

I couldn’t help thinking about our recent measures for extra protection from germs and wonder why more people don’t take similar severe measures to protect their minds and hearts. The Apostle Paul reminded the Colossian believers that since they had died and been raised with Christ, they must set their mind on things above rather on earthly things. As Christians they and we have a new identity in Christ. So we must put to death everything that belongs to our old earthly nature.

We must not allow sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed to be part of our lives anymore. We must take great care to protect ourselves from all forms of anger, malice, slander, and filthy language by replacing them with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. This is not always easy to do in a world infected with the evil germs of sin.

This is why you must think of ways to protect yourself. Take all precautions necessary to keep your heart and mind clean. You may not be able to wear a bandana mask, but you can protect your mind by only watching wholesome movies, and putting filters on your computer to ward off pornography and other harmful media. Develop a plan to keep yourself from getting into compromising situations with a boyfriend or girlfriend. Or if married choose to put up hedges to guard your heart.  Work hard to be thankful so jealousy and greed don’t infect your contentment. Stop anger short by keeping forgiveness nearby. And always tell the truth so the consequences of lies won’t affect you.

Stay Strong in Your Convictions

Keep in mind that there may be times you feel foolish for making strong decisions. Peer pressure may push you to give in. But stay strong to your convictions. Set your mind resolutely on things above, and God will reward you with His perfect peace. Not only that, but you will spend eternity with Him in glory because your life is hidden in Christ, .

Danger from the COVID-19 virus is a good incentive to take extra precautions. You may even want to check out YouTube and create your own colorful mask. But don’t forget about your mind and heart. These are at risk every day of your life and you must protect them just as carefully as you protect your physical health.

So join Abigail, me, and all the other “maskers.” Develop a plan for safety. Put on your spiritual protection equipment and keep those germs away!

Love,

Mama

Our Heavenly Crowd of Cheering Witnesses

March 18, 2020 By Sandra Sheridan Leave a Comment

Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us . . .”

Dear Kids:

Dad announcing a basketball game to empty bleachers.

This has been a few strange weeks. COVID-19 has been making its way through numerous countries and has finally invaded our neighborhoods. Little by little the regular rhythm of our life has been disrupted as our leaders have sought to protect us.

Playing and Announcing to Empty Bleachers

One of the first changes occurred last week when all fans were banned from sporting events. Upon hearing the news, Dad, who announces the women’s college basketball games at our local university, called the administrator to verify that he would no longer be needed. Much to his surprise he was asked to announce as usual. How strange! The game would be played and announced with the bleachers empty. It must have been very hard for the players to play well without the cheers of friends and family. Not to mention how hard it would be to announce to no one!

It’s always easier to persevere when there are people around encouraging you. Even in life we need support and reassurance.

Surrounded by a Heavenly Crowd of Cheering Witnesses

The writer of Hebrews tells us, “ . . . we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.” There are many who have walked the walk of faith before us. Their lives lend support and testify to us of the importance of continuing on when life gets tough. I can almost hear them even now cheering us to keep on.

Our world has been turned upside down by all we are facing. Our Abigail, a senior in high school, wonders if all the excitement of her final year – the prom, senior trips, and graduation – will be suspended or cancelled. Those with large life events such as weddings and funerals wonder how to move forward. Disappointment and fear can cause a loss of faith. But the crowds from heaven testify, “Don’t give up! God was faithful to us. He has everything under control and will supply all your needs!”

God’s Team is the Winning Team

We are now playing a portion of the game of life in troubling times. The future is uncertain and we can’t see the end. But we are not competing in front of empty bleachers. Heaven is full of faithful fans who have lived through even harder times than these without losing faith. Their lives encourage us to trust God despite our circumstances. So throw off everything that inhibits you, fix your eyes on Jesus, and persevere. And if you listen carefully you might hear the heavenly crowd of cheering witnesses urging you on because they know God’s team is the winning team.

Love,
