Jesus’ Power to Heal

Jesus' Power to Heal

Jesus’ Power to Heal

Dear Kids,

John 5:6 “When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, ‘Do you wish to get well?’”

His hope was dead – as dead as the muscles in his lifeless legs. For 38 years he had been ill and confined to this bed of suffering, causing atrophy of the muscles so needed to walk or even stand. Early on there had been some hope. That is why he had made his home among the multitude of sick and needy by the sheep gate and the pool of the five porticos.

It was said that at certain times an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the water. Whoever made it into the pool first, after the water was moved, would be made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.

All Hope Was Gone

Alas, even that faint hope was gone. Years had passed and always, while trying to reach the healing waters, someone else would arrive first and receive the blessing. Life-killing thoughts ravaged his demoralized mind.

“No one cares about me. Day after day even God’s servants, the Pharisees, pass me without even glancing in my direction, let alone stopping to help me into the moving waters in time. It must be that God, Himself, has rejected me.”

Jesus’ Power to Heal

A soft kind voice broke into his morose reverie. “Do you wish to get well?” While passing by, Jesus, the young teacher, saw him lying there. He knew that he had already been there a long time in that condition and read his thoughts. The man’s response revealed that years of discouragement had done its deadly work.

“Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming another steps down before me.”

Ignoring the invalid’s non-answer to His question, Jesus said to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” A spark of life touched the cinders of his broken and burned out heart. New power flowed through his body.

Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Jesus had asked him to do what was impossible, gave him the power to do it, and even supplied the will needed to receive the cure.

Healing Sparks Controversy

This man’s healing sparked a great controversy among the religious leaders of the day, causing Jesus to slip away quietly from the scene. Yet even the impending danger would not keep the Son of God from seeking out one who was physically and even more spiritually helpless. The Giver of Life brought this poor soul to a place of decision about Who He was and whether or not he would believe.

Jesus’ Power to Heal Spiritually

There are many today who are just as spiritually hopeless as this man was. The ravages of sin have brought them to a place where all hope seems dead and there is no way to save themselves. That is the condition of every soul who has ever lived on this earth. Yet, thank you, Jesus, for seeing us in our misery and despair. Thank you for supplying the power and the will needed to receive spiritual life and healing. This gift only comes by faith in Him.

Do you wish to get well? When brought to the point of decision, respond in faith and accept the cure that only Jesus’ power can bring.

  1. […] Matthew’s first example of Jesus’ authority involved a man suffering with the incurable disease of leprosy. The afflicted man came to Jesus pleading for healing. Jesus responded to the man’s faith with a healing touch. Normally a person touching the diseased skin of a leper would be at risk of contracting the disease himself, but from Jesus’s touch flowed health and restoration, proving He had power over disease.
