Making A Powerful Difference in the Presidential Election

“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” (NIV)

1 Timothy 2:1-4

Dear Fellow Citizens,

This is truly a momentous year for our country. In just a few short months we will have a change in our government that will impact all of us in one way or another. Even now, six months before the upcoming presidential election, the news bombards us with information, speeches, and opinions that could drive the most sane crazy. While living in a democracy such as ours, one may still wonder, “Can I really make a difference in the future of my country?” As God’s people, I believe, the answer is, “YES!”

God Ordains Government Officials

First, we must realize that there is a higher power than our government officials. While many men and women in important positions may believe they have found their way to places of prominence, the truth is that they would never be where they are if God had not ordained their leadership.

Daniel 4:17b reminds us that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets over it the lowliest of men. Those in leadership now will go or stay based on God’s decree. When we understand this important truth, it becomes easier to respect those in authority whether or not we agree with all of their policies.

Pray During A Presidential Election

Once we have reconciled ourselves to God’s sovereignty we must obey His command as given in 1 Timothy 2. Paul in his letter to Timothy, urges him to offer requests, prayers, and intercession on behalf of all men. During an election year, we can tailor our prayers to the present circumstances.

All parties, potential candidates, citizens, voters, and leaders need fervent prayer as they make decisions and cast votes that will affect our lives now and in the future. We can ask God to give wisdom to all and even to change events to bring about His will.

Paul also reminds Timothy to be thankful as he prays. This is easy to do when we remember God is in charge, has commanded us to pray, and promises to answer our prayers according to His perfect will.

Weave Scripture Into Your Prayers

Although it may seem that our world has gone crazy, Daniel again encourages us saying, “All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He [God] does as He pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: ‘What have you done?’” (Daniel 4:34-35)

As we pray for the upcoming presidential election, weaving these verses into our prayer is helpful. God doesn’t need to be reminded of His power, but we do! By reciting His words back to Him, we remind ourselves of truth, strengthen our faith, and relieve our insecurity about the future.

Many Scriptures talk about the power of prayer. Jesus told His disciples, “If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you” (John 15:7). Believers who seek God’s will, value and live by His word, and obey His command to pray for all men and women (including those in authority, whether or not they agree with their political positions) can make a huge difference. Our prayers may just catalyze a way of life where quietness, godliness, and holiness reign.

You Can Make a Difference

Can you make a difference in this upcoming presidential election? YES!

Start today by fervently praying for those in authority. Focus your heart and mind on the sovereignty of God. And trust Him to bring about His will on earth as it is in heaven. He will do it, and no one can stop Him!

Love,

Mama
