Jesus Heals Two Blind Men: Physical and Spiritual Sight

 “Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed Him.”

Matthew 20:34

Anyone who has been around for a while has probably noticed that large organizations often tend to cater to those with money. Businesses naturally look for those who can benefit them the most. Sadly, even Christian groups sometimes do the same. But Jesus never showed favoritism. He compassionately responded to the genuine cries of all people, even those who had the least to give. His physical healings pictured how the Savior also responds to cries of the heart. In today’s account Jesus heals two blind men, and today He gives spiritual sight to all who call on Him.

Jesus Loves All People Despite Status

Throughout my life I have had numerous opportunities to observe the dynamics of large organizations. In my youth I was an employee in a particular place where over time it became apparent that I was one of the “common people.” While others with deep pockets received certain benefits, those benefits were not shared with the likes of me. Being in this position caused me to feel small and insignificant, but then I thought of Jesus.

During the years of Jesus’ public ministry, He repeatedly showed that He loved and cared for all people despite their earthly status. When the disciples sought to deter the little children from approaching Jesus, He chided them and then welcomed all the youngsters to come so He could bless them.

He corrected the rich young man’s errant thinking that His status and efforts to keep the law could reward him with eternal life. He regularly taught the importance of servant leadership, constantly stating that the first shall be last and the last first. He told parables about grace and diverted a mother’s request that her sons have exalted places in God’s kingdom.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

Then one day, as He and His disciples were leaving Jericho followed by a great crowd, they came across two blind men sitting by the roadside. When the blind men realized who was passing, they shouted out to Him. “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

These handicapped men had nothing of value to offer, but they recognized their need, so they continued to cry out hoping to get Jesus’ attention. The crowd found their pleas annoying and told them to be quiet. But instead of shrinking away in embarrassment at their insignificance, they shouted even louder. And Jesus heard!

Stopping the procession, Jesus called the blind men and asked what they wanted. They humbly requested: “Lord, we want our sight.”

Rather than considering how much these men were worth or what value they could bring to His earthly ministry, He had compassion on them, touching their eyes and restoring their sight. Their joyful response was to follow Jesus!

Jesus Opens Spiritual Eyes

Today we don’t often see miraculous physical healings like Jesus did when He was here on earth, but Jesus is still in the business of opening eyes. “The god of this age [Satan] has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Cor. 4:4). But anyone, regardless of financial standing or worldly status, may call out to Jesus and He will not cast them out.

Similar to the blind men in the story, Jesus imparts spiritual sight to those who ask. He alone can open the eyes of the heart so that a person can know the sure hope of eternal life in God’s glorious kingdom.

This privilege is not just for those who have something to offer. In fact, it is not at all by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to His mercy that He saves us.

Let Jesus Impart Spiritual Sight

So, while there may be times when you feel insignificant or overlooked by a large organization, a group of people, or sadly, even in a religious environment, don’t despair. When you feel like shrinking away in embarrassment or shame then think of Jesus!

He is not a respecter of persons and His ears are listening to your cries. Let Him touch you and impart spiritual sight. Then, like the two healed men, joyfully follow Him!
