Christ-like Attitude

Dear Kids,

Philippians 2:5. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus.

Over the years I have noticed that there are many people who have a negative self image. They do not recognize that they have been specially made by God and are loved by Him, not because of what they do or what they look like, but because of who they are. Often when people struggle with this lack of self worth they tend to put others down thinking that this will make them feel better about themselves.
Though this happens in all stages of life it is especially prevalent in middle school and high school. I can remember my anxieties and frustrations as I went through physical and emotional changes as a teenager, and even into my early twenties as I took on more adult responsibilities. Unfortunately, as each one struggles and attempts to raise their self esteem by putting others down, a downward spiral begins. Those who already feel uncomfortable about themselves feel worse when teased. They then feel a need to put someone else down to lift themselves up and the cycle continues. In Philippians 2 Paul encourages us to have the same attitude as Jesus Christ: “Though He was God, He did not demand and cling to His rights as God. He made Himself nothing.” He humbled Himself by coming to earth in human form for the purpose of dying for sinners like us. He was able to endure the mocking and disrespect He encountered on earth because He knew who He was – God!

When we understand who we are in Christ – sons and daughters of the great God of heaven – and we   know how much He loves us and what He did for us, we begin to understand our true worth. This worth does not come from what we look like or what we can do, but from the fact that God made us and we are special to Him. Then when others put us down we do not need to return the favor. We can even be the one to reverse the cycle by encouraging one another and building one another up.

Today let’s begin to develop the same attitude as our Savior, Jesus Christ. Know who we are – sons and daughters of the King of heaven – and encourage others by lifting them up. You will feel so good and others will too!

Love,

Mama
