Broken Things

Broken Things

Psalm 147:3. “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages up their wounds.”

I have been sitting here mentally making a list of all the broken things that need to be fixed at our house right now. Let’s see:
1. Fix the kitchen fan/light that has been out for months now.
2. Get the rotted wood fixed by the two doors in the kitchen.
3. Replace the linoleum in the kitchen after fixing rotted wood by the doors.
4. Fix desk drawer that has been sitting on the floor by the desk for 2 years.
5. Repaint all the walls in most of the house – hasn’t been done in 18 years.
6. Revarnish the front door  – peeling from the heat of the sun.
7. Fix the wood veneer on the cabinets that has peeled away – I thought it was real wood when we bought it.
The list goes on and on. If there is one thing I have learned over the years it is “when you live life, things get broken.” Fortunately, even when we don’t have the know-how or the time to fix things ourselves, we know some very talented people we can hire when things break down.
There are other things in life that are not as simple to fix. No matter how hard we try and how careful we are, when we live life things get broken. A few months ago some friends were over and while everyone was out playing Capture the Flag, one of the men fell and broke his collar bone. He was taken to the hospital and many weeks later the bone finally healed, but not without quite a time of immobility and frustration.
There are other friends who have told me stories of coming home to an empty house. A husband or wife got tired of the daily grind, packed up and left, leaving behind a broken marriage and broken hearts. Hurt feelings, broken dreams, broken relationships – all of these things can happen when you run the risk of living life.
What do you do when your heart is broken? Who can you call to fix it? There is only one person who can repair the damage. He is our Creator, the God of Heaven. Our Lord is great and abundant in strength. His understanding of our situation is beyond comprehension. He supports those who humbly come to Him, broken heart in hand, asking for help. He can and will heal what is broken, bandaging up all wounds.
I have heard that when a broken bone heals it grows new bone that is stronger than the original. God will give you new strength to endure the heartache and as you trust His healing hand you will be able to say with the psalmist, “How good to sing praises to our God!”
Do you have your list of broken things? Then it’s time to make a call!

Love,

Mama
