Are You a Clinger?

Are You a Clinger?

Dear Kids,

Deuteronomy 10:20-21. “You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name. He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen.

Uncle Chuck Henderson

Growing up I was like most children. I had a very soft silky comforter that I loved dearly. It was my grandmother’s and she gave it to me. It kept me warm in the winter but the lustrous fabric was cool in the summertime. I clearly remember the day I realized it was beginning to look raggedy. Not only was it starting to fall apart, but I was starting to grow up. I recognized that I could not hold onto it forever, so I marched with determination to the kitchen garbage pail and dropped it on top.

I retreated back to my room but after a few minutes of deep contemplation I decided it really didn’t look too bad and I really wasn’t that old. I ran back to the kitchen, grabbed the pile of lavender softness out of the trash, and clung to it all the way back to my bedroom. Maybe another day!
All throughout our lives we find things to cling to – things that make us feel secure and safe. As we get older our “security  blankets” get more sophisticated. Often we develop confidence in our jobs or bank accounts. “If anything happens, I will be able to pay to get it fixed” we say. We safeguard against the future by stockpiling personal property or buying large insurance policies.
Often we find our courage in our spouse, our family, and our friends. In difficult times we cling to them for the support and encouragement we need to make it through. Those who are fortunate enough to have special people in their lives are very blessed.
The problem with all these amenities is that they don’t last. Money gets used up. Personal property wears out. People and relationships fail us and even die. These are not the things we should cling to tightly and rely on for our security.
The only place we can confidently go to receive the safekeeping we desire is the Lord our God. He is the One we should fear. He is the One we should serve. And He is the only One we should cling to tightly. Consider the great and awesome things He has done for you in the past and trust Him for your future. He never changes. He never lies. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is the refuge you are seeking and He promises to answer when you call.
Okay, I still have a really soft, fluffy blanket that I love to curl up with. (Thank you, Kristianna Williams!), but I know where my real security lies – in the Lord my God. He is the One I cling to! What about you?

Love,

Mama
