Soul Hunger: Finding True Satisfaction in God’s Unfailing Love

Soul Hunger: Finding True Satisfaction in God’s Unfailing Love
“Let them give thanks to the LORD for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for mankind, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”
Dear Friends,
Have you ever paused to wonder where all of the good things in life come from? Every day we share in common gifts that not only sustain us physically but also nourish our deepest emotional needs. Warm sunshine, refreshing rain, nourishing food, and more sustain our bodies. Yet, beyond these, our souls yearn to be seen, heard, and valued. It is the LORD, our Creator, Who satisfies our soul hunger. He meets all our needs and provides every good thing.
Food saturates our culture. Restaurants fill our streets, and grocery store aisles overflow with endless options to satisfy our hunger. The cereal aisle alone offers hundreds of choices to help us start the day right. But recently, I realized that hunger extends beyond a growling stomach. Sometimes, our souls experience a deep hunger – a longing to be known and validated.
A Personal Encounter With Soul Hunger
I encountered this kind of hunger during what I assumed would be a simple errand. Dad and I set out to open a joint credit card account, thinking it would be a straightforward process after thirty-five years of marriage and loyalty to the same bank. We were wrong.
After completing all the necessary paperwork, we submitted it as requested. But weeks passed, and nothing changed in the account setup. The bank struggled to validate my identity. In a separate matter, I was informed that my birth certificate was not sufficient proof of my family status, and I needed to purchase an updated version.
These frustrating circumstances caused me to wonder: can anyone confirm who I am? As I wrestled with this thought and the niggling question about my identity, I was reminded that there is One who validates me and meets my every need – not only for my existence but for my identity.
The LORD Alone Can Satisfy Soul Hunger
Each day the LORD provides everything we need to sustain life. Most of us rarely stop to consider the air we breathe, the food we eat, or the warmth of our homes on a cold day. We take these blessings for granted, assuming they will always be there. But as I listen to the heart cry of many, I realize that soul hunger is a common struggle. This emptiness often stems from seeking validation in all the wrong places rather than recognizing where our true worth comes from.
Through personal reflection, I’ve come to understand that many of my own emotional struggles don’t arise from my circumstances, but from how those situations make me feel about myself. I often measure my worth based on a loved one’s response to my suggestions, the size of my paycheck, or a friend’s body language. Even inanimate things, such as circumstances or the number of responses on social media, can either bolster or shatter my self-worth for the day.
Just as the bank requires specific proof to validate my identity, the world imposes its own standards for measuring worth. But worldly validation doesn’t define who we truly are.
Our Significance and Identity Comes from the LORD
We are significant because the LORD says we are. He pours out His common mercies on all humanity, satisfying the hungry and thirsty with good things. Yet, His blessings abound even more for those who are His children. In Christ, we are not bound by the world’s ever-changing standards of identity and worth. Our true value is found in Him alone. He alone can satisfy soul hunger.
- God created you: Before you were born, He knew you and formed you in the womb (Jeremiah 1:5).
- God loves you: Even when you didn’t love Him, He loved you and sent His Son to die for your sins (1 John 4:10).
- God chose you: He chose you in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight (Ephesians 1:4).
- God Gives You purpose: You are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which He prepared in advance for you to do (Ephesians 2:10).
- God gives you gifts: Every good and perfect gift comes from above, from the Father Who never changes (James 1:17).
All of these incredible blessings come from the LORD Who surrounds us with His unfailing love and wonderful deeds. How can we not give Him thanks?
Are you struggling with soul hunger? Take time to list all the blessings you enjoy each day so you don’t forget. Pray and ask the LORD to satisfy your thirst and hunger – both physical and emotional. Don’t conform to the world’s shifting standards of identity; instead, allow God to define who you are and reveal His purpose for your life. You are deeply loved, and every good thing comes from Him.
