Finding Gratitude in Difficult Times: The Healing at the Beautiful Gate
“Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.”
Dear Friends,
Is it really possible for adversity to produce gratitude in difficult times? When we think of thankfulness, we often associate it with blessings and the good things in our lives. But what if our struggles became the very avenue to joy and a deeper sense of gratitude? A shift like that would change everything.
When Gratitude Doesn’t Come Easily
Acts 3 opens with a touching account of a man crippled from birth. His devastating condition would be tragic in any era, but it was especially difficult in the first century. There were no disability programs, no advocacy services – only the loving help of family and friends.
This unnamed man, carried daily to the temple gate called Beautiful, spent countless hours begging for help from those passing by. One day he saw Peter and John approaching and called out for money.
A Miracle at the Beautiful Gate
Instead of ignoring his cry, they stopped and looked at him with compassion. Embarrassed by their attention, the man avoided eye contact until they asked him to look directly at them. Hoping for a small contribution, he lifted his head, but Peter had something far greater in mind.
“Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”
Before the man could process the words, Peter grasped his right hand and pulled him up. Instantly, strength surged into his feet and ankles. He jumped to his feet – his weakened muscles restored, his crippled limbs made whole. Like a calf let out of its stall, the man who had never walked under his own power was suddenly walking, leaping, and praising God as he followed Peter and John into the temple.
More Than Healing: A Heart Transformed
Everyone who witnessed his joyful celebration recognized him as the man who had begged at the gate for years. They marveled at the miracle taking place before their eyes. While the crowd was filled with amazement, the man himself was transformed forever. He wasn’t just healed physically; he recognized God’s hand and could not stop praising Him.
Hardship as the Pathway to Thankfulness
Compare his excruciating struggle with the lives of the healthy passersby. Who was truly better off – the ones who had their health yet took it for granted, or the beggar whose hardship led him to a life overflowing with gratitude and praise?
What about us? Our own difficulties often drive us to cry out to God in desperation. And when we do, He hears us. He reveals Himself in powerful ways, turning trials into opportunities for gratitude in difficult times. If we never faced hardship, we might never see how deeply we need Him, or experience the richness of His love, mercy, and grace.
Finding Gratitude in Difficult Times
So how do we cultivate gratitude even in seasons of difficulty? Start by remembering that you are not alone. God is with you. He sees you. He hears you. And He longs to be gracious to you. Lift your eyes toward Him, and soon you, like the healed man, will find yourself walking, leaping, and praising God.
Love,
Mama
