Jealousy in the Christian Life: Warnings from Acts 5

JEALOUSY IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

Jealousy in the Christian Life: Warnings from Acts 5

“Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.”

Acts 5:17

Dear Friends,

Jealousy is a terrible thing. When we want what someone else has so badly that we are willing to do wrong to obtain it, we have allowed ourselves to fall prey to Satan’s schemes. Our greatest spiritual enemy tempts people of every status with this vice—even influential religious leaders. Because of that, we must guard our hearts carefully and stay alert to even the smallest prick of this dangerous emotion.

Jealousy Exposed in the Early Church

Acts 5 records many wonderful things happening in the early church, but it also exposes the jealousy that crept into the hearts of those who should have been the most excited about what God was doing. This tension offers an important lesson about jealousy in the Christian life.

The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders, drawing crowds from all over. People brought the sick and the demon-possessed, longing to see them healed. Some even laid their loved ones on mats in the streets, hoping that if Peter’s shadow merely passed over them, healing would come.

When God’s Work Triggers Envy

Many believed in the Lord and joyfully joined the growing church every day. It was an exciting and hope-filled season – but not everyone was celebrating.

The high priest and his associates, including the Sadducees, ground their teeth at the overwhelming success of the apostles’ ministry. Consumed by jealousy, they agreed that something had to be done to stop it. So they arrested the apostles and placed them in the public jail.

Can you imagine it? Lives were being transformed – people healed, the demon-possessed set free, joyful and law-abiding citizens filling the streets and praising God. Yet the leaders simmered with resentment. All they could think about was shutting it down. Sadly, this mirrored their earlier treatment of Jesus Himself.

The Danger of Jealousy in the Christian Life

It’s easy to shake our heads at these resentful men, but jealousy has a way of seeping into all our lives if we aren’t careful.

Scrolling through social media can quietly open the door to comparison and discontent. Sometimes it’s hard to celebrate someone else’s blessing when it highlights something we deeply want. At first, we may simply scroll past their post. But if left unchecked, jealousy can lead to avoidance, bitterness, and broken relationships. Left unattended, jealousy in the Christian life can spiral quickly.

God’s Work Cannot Be Stopped

The religious leaders in Acts took their jealousy even further, using any method they could to oppose what God was doing through the apostles and the early church. They obsessed over ways to sabotage the work – but they failed. Just as crucifying Jesus did not stop God’s plan – He rose again – their schemes could not stop the Holy Spirit either. In fact, their actions ultimately backfired.

Learning from Biblical Warnings

Scripture gives us many examples to learn from; some to follow and others to avoid.

We can learn from these religious leaders who struggled with jealousy. Their refusal to submit to God’s will led to their downfall. They allowed themselves to be used by Satan rather than surrendering to the Lord. Had they humbled themselves, they would have experienced the life and peace God desired to give them.

Choosing Gratitude Over Envy

There will always be things others have that we want. But don’t allow jealousy to lead you down the wrong path. Pay attention to what’s stirring in your heart. When jealousy appears, choose gratitude, pour out your heart to God in prayer, trust Him with your future, and stay connected to others. God will give you His peace and blessing, regardless of your circumstances, because His way is always best. And nothing can stop what He is doing in your life or in the world.

Love,

Mama
