Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet: A Powerful Lesson in Humility

“It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He now showed them the full extent of His love.”

John 13:1

In the final hours before His crucifixion, Jesus did something unexpected. Instead of focusing on His own suffering, He focused on loving His disciples well. The moment when Jesus washes the disciples’ feet reveals a powerful picture of humility and servant-hearted love.

Dear Friends,

Preparing for a trip takes a great deal of forethought. There are plans to make, packing lists to create, and responsibilities to delegate. Preparing to leave also includes caring for loved ones and providing for their needs while you are gone.

I have experienced the tension of traveling while also making sure the family members staying behind are cared for. When you love people deeply, you want to make sure they are provided for in your absence.

Jesus faced a similar moment.

He knew the time had come for Him to leave this world and return to His Father. He also knew that the events leading to His departure would be painful – not only for Himself but also for the disciples He loved.

Because of that love, Jesus spent His final days preparing them for what was ahead. Soon He would demonstrate the full extent of His love through His death on the cross, but before that moment came, He prepared their hearts for what they would face.

Preparing the Disciples for His Departure

Earlier in the Gospel of John, we read how Jesus called a group of disciples to follow Him closely. They came from different walks of life, yet they lived, traveled, and learned together under His teaching.

Over time they came to understand who He truly was, the Son of God and the promised Messiah, and they grew to love and trust Him deeply.

Jesus knew that His death and return to the Father were necessary. But He also knew that His departure would be difficult for these men who had walked beside Him for years.

So just before the Passover Feast, soon before His crucifixion, Jesus began preparing them for the future. He taught them about their mission and encouraged them for the days ahead.

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

During the Passover meal, Jesus demonstrated His love in an unforgettable way.

While the disciples watched, the Creator of the universe removed His outer garment, wrapped a towel around His waist, knelt down with a basin of water, and began washing their dusty feet.

This humble act shocked the disciples.

They knew who Jesus was. Why would their Teacher and Lord perform a task normally reserved for the lowest servant?

They didn’t yet understand that Jesus washing the disciples’ feet pointed to an even greater act of love He would soon perform.

Peter’s Reaction

Peter immediately objected.

He declared that he would never allow Jesus to wash his feet.

But Jesus gently replied,

“Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.”

Suddenly Peter changed his request and asked for his hands and head to be washed as well. Jesus patiently explained that someone who has already bathed only needs his feet washed.

The disciples, except for Judas, had believed in Jesus as the Messiah. In that sense, they were already clean.

Yet like believers today, they lived in a sinful world. As they walked through daily life, their “feet” would become dirty. They would need regular confession to keep their fellowship with the Lord unhindered.

The Deeper Meaning of Foot Washing

The moment when Jesus washes the disciples’ feet pointed to the spiritual cleansing every person needs.

His actions also illustrated the importance of daily confession and humility before God.

Jesus assured the disciples that they would understand more fully later. Then He gave them a clear challenge.

As He, their Teacher and Lord, had washed their feet, they were to serve one another in the same humble way.

Following Jesus’ Example

The moment when Jesus washes the disciples’ feet gives us a beautiful picture of His love and humility.

As we spend time this Easter week reflecting on God’s gracious gift through Jesus, may we follow His example. Serving others is not always convenient or easy. Sometimes it feels uncomfortable or even unpleasant.

But if the Son of God humbled Himself to serve us, then we must be willing to do the same.

So here is a question to consider this week:

What humble act of love can you offer someone else?

Pray about it…
Then step out and do it.

Love,

Mama

I enjoyed preparing these thoughts for the Easter season. I am so grateful for what Jesus did when He came, died, and rose again, to set me free from sin. He is risen! Praise the Lord!
