Jesus’ Authority Over Life and Death: Lessons from the Crucifixion

“This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled.”

John 18:9

Dear Friends,

Our culture prides itself on “being the master of our own fate.” We celebrate those who seem to have pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps and aspire to be just like them. Yet, all such boasting falls short of reality. No human determines the full trajectory of their life. Many factors, seen and unseen, shape our path.

In my own life, I have never been able to plan everything completely and see it through to fruition. There are too many mitigating factors beyond my control, shaping the outcomes in ways I cannot predict.

Jesus’ Authority Over Life and Death

The only person who ever planned and accomplished every detail of His life on earth was the Son of God. He is the ultimate Master of destiny, demonstrating Jesus’ authority over life and death.

John, in his eyewitness account, demonstrates this truth by carefully detailing the events of Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion. He testifies, “the man who saw it gave testimony, and his testimony is true” (John 19:35).

The many events of that Good Friday were not random occurrences. “They happened so that the words Jesus had spoken would be fulfilled.”

Even when Jesus’ arrest seemed orchestrated by Judas and the Jewish leaders, He had already planned how everything would unfold. Jesus directed the events, fully aware of what was to come.

When Pilate, the Roman ruler of Judea, flaunted his authority over Jesus, the Lord declared, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.” Evil men may make plans, but Jesus remains in control. He willingly surrendered Himself, fulfilling Scripture, so that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.

Consider these examples that reveal Jesus’ authority over life and death during Passion Week:

Jesus’ Authority in the Garden

When soldiers came to arrest Him, Jesus stepped forward and commanded them to let His disciples go. They obeyed, fulfilling His words: “I have not lost one of those You gave Me.”

Jesus’ Authority Over Peter’s Denial

Later, in the courtyard of the high priest, Peter denied knowing Jesus three times – just as Jesus had predicted. Even in Peter’s weakness, Jesus’ authority ensured prophecy was fulfilled.

Jesus’ Authority Before Pilate

Early in the morning, Pilate questioned Jesus about the charges brought against Him. Though the governor pressed the religious leaders to judge Him themselves, they insisted on execution. This exchange took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death He was going to die – crucifixion. Every detail unfolded exactly as Jesus had foretold.

Jesus’ Authority in the Crucifixion

Jesus was flogged, mocked, and nailed to the cross while soldiers divided His garments by casting lots. “They divided up my clothes among them and cast lots for my garments” Even in the suffering of the cross, the smallest details revealed Jesus’ authority over life and death.

Jesus’ Authority Over His Own Death

As He neared the end, Jesus declared, “I am thirsty.” Soldiers offered Him wine vinegar on a hyssop stalk. He drank, then proclaimed, “It is finished!” When soldiers sought to hasten His death by breaking legs, they found Jesus had already died. Scripture was fulfilled: “Not one of His bones will be broken… They will look on the One they have pierced.”

Jesus’ Authority in Burial

Jesus’ followers, including Nicodemus, laid Him in Joseph’s tomb, awaiting the ultimate demonstration of Jesus’ authority over life and death. His body was dead, but His power over death was about to be revealed.

Jesus’ Authority in Your Life Today

As we reflect on the tragedy of Jesus’ death, remember this: the One who controlled every detail of those events also governs every detail of your life. Stop striving to be the master of your own fate – it is an impossible ambition. Instead, look to the One with authority over all things, including life and death.

Place your hope and trust in Him.

Love,

Mama

Take a moment today to reflect on the cross. The One who controlled every detail of His suffering and death is the same Savior who holds your life in His hands. Will you trust Him?
