Jesus Prays for Us: A Comforting Truth from John 17
Jesus Prays for Us: A Comforting Truth from John 17
“I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth . . . I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word . . .”
Dear Friends,
The Powerful Gift of Prayer
One of the greatest gifts we can give someone is prayer. Sometimes it is the only meaningful gift we can offer.
Have you ever been the recipient of someone’s heartfelt and faithful prayer? I have – and it is both comforting and empowering.
Ten days before my second child was born, I woke up with severe pain in my side. At the hospital, doctors ran numerous tests trying to determine the cause. When they could not identify the problem, they scheduled a C-section to deliver the baby so further testing could be done.
When Answers Don’t Come Easily
The days I spent sitting in that hospital bed waiting for answers were difficult.
Less than a year earlier, my grandfather had passed away. He had been the chaplain in our small church, and now there were fewer people able to visit. Dad was working – this was long before paternity leave – and my mom was caring for my 14-month-old son, Luke.
Then one day, there was a knock at my hospital door.
The Gift of a Simple Prayer
An older woman from our church peeked into the room. Henrietta – kind, sincere, and known for a few interesting quirks – walked in, sat beside my bed, and prayed for me.
As she spoke to our heavenly Father on my behalf, I felt peace flood my heart.
It was the greatest gift she could have given in that moment. She couldn’t fix my situation, but she could pray. And I immediately felt the comfort of her loving intercession.
That simple act of love reminds me of something remarkable in Scripture: Jesus prays for us, just as Henrietta prayed for me.
Jesus Prays for His Disciples
As Jesus began to conclude His teaching to the disciples, He lifted His eyes to heaven in prayer. In that moment, Jesus prays for us, not just for His closest followers. Death stood just beyond the door, yet He would not turn away from it. The cross was the only way salvation could be provided for His disciples and for the world.
In these final moments, Jesus gave His followers a profound gift.
He prayed for them.
But the beauty of this moment is even greater: Jesus didn’t pray only for them.
In His prayer recorded in John 17, Jesus prayed for all who would one day believe through their message.
That includes you and me.
Jesus Prays for All Believers
Speaking aloud to His Father, Jesus affirmed His obedience. He had spoken God’s words and revealed the Father to the world.
He was, as Hebrews 1:3 tells us, “the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature.” The work the Father had given Him was now complete.
Then Jesus declared the heart of the gospel:
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
After praying for Himself, Jesus turned His attention to His followers. He did not ask that they be removed from the world. Instead, He asked the Father to protect them from the evil one.
He knew it was God’s Word, the truth, that would sanctify them.
Their mission would not be easy. Just as the Father had sent Jesus into the world, Jesus was now sending them to proclaim the truth. They needed to live lives set apart in character, word, and deed.
Jesus Prays for You and Me
Finally, Jesus looked down the corridors of time and asked for all those who would believe in Him through the disciples’ message – Jesus prays for us and for every future believer.
Through grace and faith, they too would become one with the Father and the Son. And they would continue spreading the gospel throughout the generations.
What an astonishing moment!
The Savior of the world, the Son of God, praying not only for His disciples, but also for us.
The Comfort of Knowing Jesus Prays for Us
Thousands of years later, we still celebrate the greatest gift ever given: Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.
But sometimes we forget another remarkable truth.
Jesus prayed for us.
He loved us enough to go to the cross, and He loved us enough to bring our needs before the Father.
Whatever you may be facing today, take comfort in this truth: Jesus prays for us.
You are loved.
You are prayed for.
You have been offered eternal life.
And that truly is the greatest gift of all.
Love,
Mama
If this reminder encouraged your heart today, share it with someone who needs to know they are loved and prayed for. Your simple act may bring them comfort and hope.
