Starlink, Mountain Roads, and Connection With God Through Jesus Christ

 “But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”

Dear Friends,

Just as we began ascending the narrow mountain road leading to the house our family had rented in the hills of West Virginia, I saw a text message come through. Those who had arrived ahead of us on our special getaway wanted to warn us about the steep climb and treacherous switchbacks we were about to encounter.

They weren’t exaggerating.

In fact, we realized we were in for an even greater adventure than the unpaved road and steep drop-offs when, halfway up the mountain, we suddenly lost our internet connection.

Upon arriving at our vacation spot, I prepared myself for a few days without any link to the outside world. We were tucked into a beautiful but isolated mountain holler where cell service and internet access were practically nonexistent.

When the Signal Disappeared

But that’s when Nathan came to the rescue.

Owning a family business makes it difficult to completely unplug when clients are relying on you, so Nathan had the foresight to bring our Starlink unit. Through this remarkable technology, Dad was able to connect to his email by satellite.

That evening, I stood outside and looked up through the circle of trees surrounding the house. Above me stretched a brilliant canopy of stars, interrupted only by the moving lights of satellites crossing the night sky. It amazed me to think that we could access communication and information from miles above the earth because of a small box sitting outside our mountain retreat.

A Connection Beyond Technology

As I stood there beneath the stars, I was reminded of an even greater truth.

God, who made the mountain, the trees, and the stars, is infinitely more powerful than any technology mankind could ever create. As I took in the beauty surrounding us, I couldn’t help but think about Him.

What a gift it is to have a connection with the Creator of the universe! No matter where we go, He is always there. Yet this connection with God through Jesus Christ is not something we earn through our own efforts.

One cannot connect with God through hard work, religious rituals, or attempts to obey His laws. There is no special technology capable of linking sinful human beings to a perfectly holy God.

Connection With God Through Jesus

The only way to have peace with God and a relationship with Him is through faith in Jesus Christ, His Son. He alone provides the connection with God through Jesus Christ that every sinner desperately needs. Without Him, we fall short because of our sin.

Knowing the great gulf that separated us from Him, God sent His perfect Son to be the sacrifice for our sins. By His grace, Jesus’ blood cleanses and justifies all who place their trust in Him. When we receive this gift by faith, we not only gain a relationship with God, but He comes to dwell within us through His Spirit.

Nothing can separate us from Him and His love – not steep mountain switchbacks, a loss of internet service, distance, hardship, or anything else. He will never leave us or forsake us.

A Reminder From Faith Mountain

I am home now with wonderful memories of our family getaway on Faith Mountain, as it was aptly named. There I enjoyed precious time connecting with my children and grandchildren. But most importantly, I was reminded of the Creator and the incredible gift of His presence.

Technology like Starlink can help us stay connected to people across great distances, but only Jesus Christ provides a lasting connection with God. That connection is not made possible through good works, religious effort, or human achievement. It comes through the precious gift of God’s Son.
