God’s Call to Service: You Were Never Meant to Serve Alone

 “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.” (NIV)

Acts 13:2-3

Dear Friends,

American culture celebrates independence. We admire people who chart their own course, make their own decisions, and accomplish their goals through determination and hard work. We honor the courage of the pioneers who left family and friends behind to build new lives despite danger and uncertainty. While God may call us to difficult assignments, He never intends for us to determine our own path, or carry out His work alone.

Scripture reminds us that apart from God we can accomplish nothing of eternal value. Only as we are filled with the Holy Spirit can we fulfill God’s call to service, not merely pursue our own ambitions. God also uses other believers to confirm His direction, encourage us, and support us as we faithfully serve Him.

We Cannot Fulfill God’s Call to Service Alone

Barnabas and Saul provide a beautiful example of God’s call to service. They were faithful leaders in the church at Antioch, and while the church’s leadership was worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit revealed the work He had prepared for them. He instructed the leaders to set Barnabas and Saul apart for this special ministry.

Even after receiving this clear calling, Barnabas and Saul didn’t immediately pack their belongings and leave. Instead, they, along with the other church leaders, continued praying and fasting as they prepared for the mission ahead. When the time came, the leaders placed their hands on them, publicly affirming God’s call and committing to support them through prayer and encouragement.

The Church Confirmed God’s Calling

Commissioning believers for ministry is an important step before they begin a significant work for God. It sends them out with the confidence that fellow believers have prayed for them, affirmed God’s calling, and committed to standing beside them. When difficulties arise – and they always do – the memory of that special moment can strengthen their resolve, quiet their doubts, and remind them they are not serving alone.

Later, Paul wrote to Timothy, “Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands.” Serving God is a sacred responsibility, and those called to positions of leadership or ministry should never be chosen carelessly. These decisions require thoughtful prayer and spiritual discernment. While age alone does not determine readiness, those being commissioned should demonstrate spiritual maturity and a humble dependence on God. Lasting spiritual fruit comes only through His power, never through our own abilities.

Barnabas and Saul were ready. The rest of the book of Acts tells the remarkable story of what God accomplished through them – especially Saul, who later became known as Paul.

Every Believer Has God’s Call to Service

God doesn’t call only the people we consider important. God’s call to service is extended to every believer.

Not everyone is called to serve in distant countries, but every believer is called to serve faithfully wherever God has placed them. Some teach little children in Sunday School. Others share Christ with neighbors or coworkers. Some lead Bible studies, while others are prepared to answer the questions of friends searching for the truth. Whatever God’s call to service looks like in your life, you were never meant to fulfill it alone. Surround your work with prayer and encourage fellow believers as together you follow Christ.

Encourage Someone Who Is Serving

Many churches have special commissioning services where they lay hands on missionaries, pastors, or others who are beginning a new ministry. But wouldn’t it be wonderful if we offered that same love, encouragement, and prayerful support to one another as we faithfully served Christ every day?

Today, look for someone who has been faithfully serving the Lord and encourage them. If appropriate, place a hand on their shoulder and pray for them aloud. Tell them you are standing with them and asking God to guide, strengthen, and bless them as they follow His will. Your encouragement may be exactly what they need to keep going.

We are not pioneers struggling through life’s wilderness alone. We are God’s people, answering God’s call to service together. As we seek His will, depend on His strength, and encourage one another, He can accomplish far more through us than we could ever do on our own.

God never intended us to serve alone. As we depend on Him and encourage one another, He accomplishes far more than we ever could ourselves.

How has God called you to serve? This week, encourage someone who is faithfully serving Christ. Pray with them, remind them they are not alone, and ask God to strengthen both of you as you follow God’s call to service together.
