The Eternal Impact of Faithful Service for God
The Eternal Impact of Faithful Service for God
“This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.”
Dear Friends,
After the giving of the Holy Spirit, the message of the gospel spread throughout the world. At the beginning of the book of Acts, Jesus told His disciples they would be His witnesses, taking the good news to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Their powerful preaching changed lives, but sometimes the gospel spread through unexpected and seemingly obscure means.
The Gospel Spread Beyond Famous Preachers
Often we connect salvation stories with great preachers. Grandma and Grandpa Henderson lived during the height of Billy Graham’s ministry. During one of his New York City crusades, Grandma and several others from our church sang in the choir. They heard Billy’s powerful messages firsthand and witnessed repentant sinners walking the long aisles of Madison Square Garden to receive Christ as Savior.
Thousands came to Christ over the course of Billy Graham’s ministry as he faithfully preached the gospel around the world. Yet many salvation stories began through much quieter and less visible influences — mine included.
My Own Salvation Story Began at Home
I received Jesus as my Savior one evening in my bedroom as I settled down to sleep. My dad, who had quietly and consistently modeled a life of faith before me, led me to Christ that night. He, along with many non-famous Sunday School teachers, family members, and mentors, helped me grow spiritually along the way. For their faithful service for God, I am eternally grateful.
Tabitha’s Quiet Life of Faithful Service For God
In Acts 9, Luke mentions another seemingly obscure person who made a profound eternal impact through her everyday life. Tabitha, sometimes called Dorcas, did not preach sermons or perform spectacular miracles. Instead, she lived a quiet life of faithful service for God by doing many charitable deeds.
She was especially known for her sewing skills. Regularly, she made robes and other clothing for the poor and widows in her city of Joppa. Her faithful service for God through consistent love and care meant so much to the people around her that when she died, the disciples in Joppa sent word to Peter, who was staying in the nearby city of Lydda, urging him to come immediately.
When Peter arrived, he was taken to the upstairs room where Tabitha’s body lay. Around her stood grieving widows, tearfully showing him the beautiful garments she had lovingly made for them.
A Miracle That Pointed People to Christ
After taking in the heartbreaking scene, Peter sent the grieving women out of the room, shut the door, and dropped to his knees in prayer. Then he turned toward the body and said, “Tabitha, get up.”
Immediately, the dead woman opened her eyes and sat up. Peter took her by the hand and helped her to her feet before calling the believers and widows back into the room.
Imagine the joy that must have filled that house as sorrow suddenly turned into celebration.
But the impact of the miracle did not stop there. Word of Tabitha’s resurrection spread quickly throughout Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord and received the gospel message. Peter remained in the city for some time, continuing to preach and teach. His message carried even greater weight because it was connected to the faithful life of an obscure woman who had quietly served others in Jesus’ name.
God Uses Ordinary People in Extraordinary Ways
It is easy to discount our ability to serve God in meaningful ways. Not everybody can be Peter, Paul, or Billy Graham. Yet celebrity, extraordinary talent, and powerful influence are not the only things God uses to make a difference in the world.
God uses all those who allow the Holy Spirit to fill them and who live lives of faithful service for Him and compassionate service to others. Quiet obedience, humble generosity, and faithful service for God can spread the gospel just as surely as a sermon preached to thousands.
What gifts or opportunities has God placed in your hands today that could quietly point someone to Christ?
Your Faithfulness Matters More Than You Know
Seek the Lord daily. Ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit and give you opportunities to serve others through humble service. Then live consistently and faithfully in all you do.
Are you a Sunday School teacher? Teach joyfully.
Are you a seamstress? Sew and share skillfully.
Are you a mother of young children? Care for your little ones faithfully.
Never underestimate how God can use one quiet act of obedience to point someone to Christ.
Love,
Mama
Consider the gifts, talents, and opportunities God has placed in your hands. No act of faithful service for God is ever too small when it is done in love and obedience to Him. How might God use your everyday faithfulness to point someone to Christ today? If this message encouraged you, share it with someone else who needs the reminder that ordinary lives can have eternal impact.
