Do You Need to Change Directions Spiritually? Lessons from Saul’s Life-Changing Transformation
“Now for several days he was with the disciples who were at Damascus, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, ‘He is the Son of God.’”
Dear Friends,
Dad and I hadn’t been married very long before he discovered the depth of my navigational challenges. I’ve never had a good sense of direction, and it has gotten me into many frustrating situations over the years.
One day we were driving to a wedding in my home state of New Jersey. Dad, being from Ohio and unfamiliar with New Jersey roads, relied on me to guide him to the church using a set of hand-drawn directions. (This was before the days of GPS.)
As we continued down the highway, we wondered why it was taking so long to arrive at our destination. We had been completely confident we were headed the right way, yet with every mile we were moving farther from where we needed to be. Finally, Dad stopped the car to look at the map himself. After studying it briefly, he turned the page 180 degrees. I had been holding the map upside down, leading us away from the venue instead of toward it. In order to get back on track, we had to make a U-turn — a perfect picture of what it means to change directions spiritually.
Saul’s Journey to Damascus
It’s not only on the highway that people lose their way. Saul, a well-trained and zealous Pharisee, was headed full speed toward Damascus intent on persecuting the Christians there. But as he neared the city, God confronted him through blindness, and Saul’s entire life direction changed 180 degrees as he began to change directions spiritually.
Three days later, after receiving his sight, Saul immediately began proclaiming the very Jesus he had once persecuted as the Son of God. Those who heard him could hardly believe the dramatic transformation. They questioned whether he was the same man who had previously arrested and persecuted believers.
Meanwhile, the Pharisees who had authorized Saul to punish the followers of Jesus became increasingly agitated. The tables had turned. Their greatest champion had switched sides, astonishing the people in Damascus by skillfully proving that Jesus was the Christ.
Opposition After Transformation
Determined to maintain control, the angry leaders devised a plan to kill Saul. But during the night, believers lowered him over the city wall in a basket and helped him escape.
Saul’s life direction change was obvious, but it wasn’t easy. When he arrived in Jerusalem and attempted to associate with the believers there, they were hesitant. They knew the havoc he had inflicted on the church and were unsure whether he could be trusted. It was only after Barnabas, a respected and trustworthy believer, vouched for the change he had witnessed in Saul’s life that the others accepted him.
Saul continued to preach boldly in Jerusalem, proclaiming the name of Jesus. But his powerful arguments stirred up even more hostility among the Hellenistic Jews. Like the leaders in Damascus, they also attempted to put him to death. Once again, believers helped Saul escape, sending him away to his hometown of Tarsus.
Becoming a New Creation in Christ
Later, Saul — now called Paul — testified to the transformation that occurred when he met Jesus. He wrote to the Corinthians:
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
This about-face change occurs not only in Paul’s story, but in the life of everyone who places their trust in Jesus as Savior. While we do not become perfect immediately, our entire life trajectory changes. In Christ, we are reconciled to God, our sins are forgiven, our values begin to change, our purpose becomes clearer, and our desires are reshaped. The old life truly passes away, and a new life begins in Christ.
