God Prepares the Way: Lessons from Peter and Cornelius in Acts 10

“About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.”

Acts 10:9

Dear Friends,

I have always loved a good story. The best stories introduce a conflict early, build to a climax, and end with a satisfying resolution. Many books and movies set scenes in more than one place at a time. By jumping back and forth between narratives, we learn what is happening in two locations simultaneously. This knowledge helps us understand how and why the conflict finally resolves and reveals how God prepares the way for His purposes.

As readers, we often enjoy knowing what the characters do not. Acts 10 gives us that unique perspective and allows us to watch God orchestrate events in two places at the same time.

Two Stories Converging

Acts 10 introduces us to two key players in the spread of the gospel beyond Jerusalem and Judea. Cornelius, a devout and God-fearing Gentile centurion, lived in Caesarea. He regularly prayed to God and gave generously to those in need, yet he had no knowledge of salvation through Jesus Christ.

One afternoon, about three o’clock, Cornelius had a vision of an angel. The angel affirmed his prayers and acts of generosity and instructed him to send men to the neighboring town of Joppa for a man named Peter.

Cornelius immediately obeyed. He assigned two of his servants and one of his personal attendants to travel to Joppa and bring Peter back with them.

This may seem like a simple request to modern readers, but understanding the history between these two groups changes everything. Peter was Jewish, and Cornelius was a Gentile. These groups typically avoided close association with one another.

As Cornelius’ representatives approached Joppa around noon the next day, they were likely wondering what the outcome of their mission would be. But—as might be said in modern storytelling—”meanwhile in another part of town,” God was preparing the way.

God Prepares Peter’s Heart

The biblical scene shifts to a rooftop where Peter had gone to pray.

As he talked with the Lord, he became hungry. While waiting for a meal to be prepared, he fell into a trance and saw heaven opened. Something like a large sheet descended from the sky, suspended by its four corners. Inside were all kinds of animals, reptiles, and birds—including many considered unclean according to Jewish law.

As Peter watched, he heard a voice say, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”

The command shocked him.

“Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”

But the voice spoke again.

“Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”

This exchange occurred three times before the sheet was taken back into heaven.

Stunned and confused by the strange vision, Peter sat pondering its meaning until a voice called out from the gate. At that very moment, the Holy Spirit told him to get up, go downstairs, and accompany the three men waiting outside.

“Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”

An Unexpected Invitation

Peter went down and introduced himself to the men.

After hearing about Cornelius—the righteous and God-fearing man respected by the Jewish community in his area—and learning about the angel’s instructions, Peter invited the three men into his home as guests.

The next morning, Peter, the three men, and several believers traveled together to Caesarea.

The following day, Cornelius, eagerly expecting their arrival, saw them approaching. He rushed out to meet Peter and fell at his feet in reverence.

Peter quickly corrected him.

“Stand up,” he said. “I am only a man myself.”

As they talked, they entered the house where a large crowd had gathered to hear Peter’s message.

After Cornelius and Peter each recounted their side of the story, the purpose behind these unusual events became clear.

Salvation Comes to the Gentiles

Peter preached the good news of peace through Jesus Christ.

As he spoke, the Holy Spirit came upon all who heard the message, just as He had come upon the Jewish believers. The new followers of Christ began speaking in tongues and praising God.

It became clear to everyone present that salvation had come to the Gentiles as well.

The evidence was undeniable. God had accepted them through faith in Jesus Christ.

Peter then ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and remained with them for several days, encouraging and teaching the new believers.

God Prepares the Way Today

It is thrilling to see how God worked out His will in ways no one involved could have imagined. As early as God’s covenant with Abraham in the Old Testament, He promised that all nations would be blessed through Him. Here in Acts 10, we see the beginnings of that promise being fulfilled.

Despite cultural barriers, long-standing traditions, and human uncertainty, God worked through everyone involved to accomplish His plan—the spread of the gospel to all people.

Even today, God continues to work in lives, and He often uses His children to do it. We pray, obey, and wait while, “meanwhile in another part of town,” God prepares the way for incredible encounters that take the gospel farther.

Are you seeking God? Are you praying for His will to be done?

Don’t give up.

You may not see the whole story yet, but God does. While you wait, continue to pray, obey, and trust Him. When we cannot see the full narrative, we can rest assured that God prepares the way even when His work remains hidden from us.

One day you may look back and realize that while you were faithfully waiting, God was already arranging circumstances, preparing hearts, and writing a much bigger story than you could see.

Love,

Mama
