Mind Album

Ephesians 4:23.  “Be renewed in the spirit of your minds.” 
 
Your mind is like a camera. When you see something it becomes imbedded in your brain and will never go away. That is why it is very important to guard carefully what you allow your eyes to see. When I was around eight or nine years old I remember walking with my family through a mall.  As we strolled through the thoroughfare my eye caught sight of a poster hanging in a shop.  It was a disgusting picture of something I had never seen before. My mind took a snapshot of the image even though I immediately turned my eyes away. It is now almost 40 years later and at times that image comes to my memory.

The world has many things that can fill your mind.  Today it is even easier to capture those images.  With just a click of a button you can fill your mind with all kinds of filth.  It is easy to sit in front of the TV and become deadened to all sorts of worldly activity – things that God says are wrong. “Everyone else is doing it” is often a favorite excuse or “Well, this isn’t too bad; there are only a few bad words or scenes in this one.” Unfortunately our minds are becoming clogged with ungodly photos that we will never be able to get rid of. The saddest part is that as we fill our minds with these images, it is easy to begin acting in a way that is devastating to ourselves and our families.  Many marriages have fallen apart because one of the partners has become addicted to pornography.  Just one harmless glance turned into a whole album of degrading pictures that deadened the person’s soul and marriage.

Today’s verse tells us we need to be renewed in the spirit of our mind. In this world of instant filth, we need to go to great lengths to make sure the mind pictures we are taking are pleasing to God. This is the way to be spiritually healthy. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”
