No EKG Needed

1 Corinthians 5:21 “God made Him Who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Dear Kids,

I lay shivering on the sofa as the itinerant nurse attached the sticky tabs to my body. Dad and I had decided to change our life insurance policy and the prerequisite was an extensive physical including an electrocardiogram – otherwise known as an EKG. This test checks for problems with the electrical activity of your heart.

On cue, I stayed as still as could while the machine did its job measuring my heart’s activity and recording it in spikes and dips on a long piece of paper. After it was over I asked the nurse how I did. Her response was that she was not qualified to read the results. I would have to wait for a trained technician to look at the reading. Hopefully, everything is fine.

The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 17:9 that our spiritual heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. We are all born with this sinful heart condition. Though we may not know the extent of our wretchedness, God, Who searches the heart, does.

This malady keeps us from having a relationship with our Creator. But God, Who is rich in mercy, wanted to restore what was lost when the first man and woman chose to disobey and brought sin into the world. He sent His only, Jesus, Who had no sin of His own, into the world to be the cure for this otherwise incurable heart disease.

As we accept the forgiveness He offers through the blood that Jesus shed on the cross, He makes our sinful hearts healthy and whole.

The problem is that so many of us never seem to grasp the fact that once we are washed in the blood of Christ we are clean in God’s sight. Many tend to wallow in the guilt of the things that they have done in the past and live as if they still have the heart malady they were born with.

The truth is that no matter what a forgiven person’s history is, when God looks at them He no longer sees their sin. It has been washed away as far as the east is from the west, and He only sees Christ’s righteousness.

If anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come. All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ. No longer does He count the forgiven man’s sin against him. His heart is healed and he is free.

I will have to wait for a trained technician’s report to find out how my EKG came out. I am assuming everything is fine, but I am so thankful that I don’t have to wonder about my spiritual heart.

If you believe in Jesus, the One Who had no sin of His own and yet was made sin for us, you can be sure that in God’s sight your heart is clean and healthy. No need to carry around guilt and shame anymore! It’s gone forever – and you don’t need an EKG to know that.

Love,

Mama

I love this statement that " I am so thankful that I don't have to wonder about my spiritual heart." There is such peace in that statement… Thank you for reminding me of that….<3
