Dead Chickens

Psalm 103:11-12. “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

A number of years ago we raised our first flock of chickens. One morning, after having invested months raising these feathered friends, I went to the barn and met a disastrous sight. During the night a coyote or some other wild animal had bypassed our attempts at security, crept into the barn, and killed almost all of the birds.

After I recovered from the shock of the sight, it was obvious that we needed to get rid of these carcases. Dad and I dug a large hole in the back pasture to bury them. The ground was hard, but we finally got it deep enough to fit the birds. We filled the hole with dirt and tried to forget the whole messy experience.

A few days later I stepped out onto the back porch. To my surprise I found one of the dead chickens lying there. I gingerly grabbed it by the leg and took it to the field to dispose of it as quickly as possible.

The next day the same thing happened. Our dear dog, Maggie, kept digging up the dead chickens and leaving the presents on our back porch. Each time she brought a new fowl corpse it was more putrid and maggot-infested than the last one. It wasn’t until I took them down the road and threw them into the woods that they stopped showing up.

We have this same problem with our sins. We often think that we can bury them and that God will never know. But nothing is hidden from God. The Bible says, “Be sure your sins will find you out.”  No matter how hard we try, the pain and guilt keep returning until the burden is too great to bear.

But there is good news. I John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  When we accept Christ’s payment for our sins, He removes our transgressions as far as the east is from the west.  They are buried in the deepest sea – gone forever. That is why Christ came to earth – to set us free.

It was a happy day when the dead chickens stopped showing up on our back porch. Give your sin and burdens to the Lord today and let him remove them as far as the east is from the west.

Love,

Mama
