One Day of Rest – Not Enough!

One Day of Rest – Not Enough!

Matthew 11:28. “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (ESV)

Emily Suzanne Sheridan

I kept thinking, “Just one more day until the long weekend,” as I dragged my tired body up the stairs last night. It has only been a couple of weeks since summer vacation ended, but it seems like forever. One day the schedule was free and easy and the next we were diving deep into early mornings, packed lunches, homework, and sporting events. Stop the merry-go-round I want to get off!

Labor Day is an annual celebration that started in the late 1800s. During the time of the Industrial Revolution many people were forced to work 12 hour days, 7 days a week. Often young children were conscripted to work in factories for long hours in dangerous and unhealthy conditions.
People began to protest by striking and causing riots, some of which turned fatal. After a disastrous riot where more than a dozen workers were killed, Congress passed an act recognizing Labor Day, a day of rest and celebration for the working class, an annual holiday.
Though we do not usually face such long and dangerous work conditions, we have found other ways to exhaust ourselves. The invention of all sorts of modern conveniences have only freed us to fill our lives with different kinds of activities. Even in our service to God we can become exhausted physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Jesus understands this. He also experienced fatigue when He humbled Himself and took on a body of flesh. He calls for those who are weary to come to Him to receive rest. Bring Him your emotional cares, your spiritual concerns, and your physical weaknesses. Those who come will find freedom from sin and guilt, liberty from fear and doubt, along with help and comfort in time of need. Jesus is able to give rest to your body and your soul.
I am so looking forward to this Labor Day weekend, but one day is not going to provide all the refreshment that I need. There is only one person who can do that. Take all your heavy burdens to Jesus, the One who can give eternal rest.

Love,

Mama

Sandy, rest is so important in our lives. I found this most especially true when for 1 year and 7 months my alarm clock went off between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Talk about sleep deprivation! I learned how important rest is emotionally, physically and spiritually. And I’ve also learned that while I may have physical rest I may not have it spiritually. There’s got to be a balance there 🙂 still working on it. Happy to have found you on Cisneros Cafe.
