Want to know a secret?

Dear Kids,

Psalm 25:14. “The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him, And He will make them know His covenant.”

Secrets, secrets, are no fun unless you share with everyone.
This is a crazy saying that has gone around for years. It was probably made up by some school teacher who was trying to eliminate the difficulty of children excluding others by whispering and telling tales.
I have a little problem with this cute rhyme, though. If you tell everyone your secret – IT’S NOT A SECRET ANYMORE. Who wants to have a secret that everyone knows? The fun part is keeping it hidden in your heart and mind and sharing it only with certain intimate friends.
When I was 12 years old my mom and dad discovered they were going to have another baby. They told my brother and me that we had to keep it a secret for a little while until they felt it was appropriate to tell others.  Uncle Chuck and I were so excited. We developed a code so that when we passed in the halls at school we could share our secret without anyone else knowing.  We would wink at each other and say the cryptic letters, MHAB (Mom’s Having A Baby). This secret knowledge bonded us together with the information that only we knew.
Did you know that God has secrets He tells to those He loves? He doesn’t reveal them to just anyone. He waits for someone who loves and fears Him to seek Him out through His word and in prayer. In doing this we develop a love relationship with Him and He begins to make His thoughts known to us.
Sometimes the things He tells us are highly personal. When we are going through a difficulty and we share with Him what we are going through, He will often bring to our hearts and minds a special Bible verse that will encourage us as we walk through the trial. Other times He will reveal Himself through nature or through a common every day experience.
Other times His Holy Spirit will guide us into truth that we had never seen before. As we study God’s word for ourselves, He opens our eyes to things that reveal His nature and strengthen our trust in Him.
He does not do this with just anybody – only with those who love and fear Him. These are the ones whom He will instruct in the way He chooses for them. These are the ones to whose souls He will bring joy. These are the ones to whom He makes known His covenant.
Secrets, secrets are no fun unless you share with everyone. Not with God. Though He desires everyone to come to know His plan of salvation, He keeps the secrets for those who have committed their lives to Him and seek to fear and know Him deeply. Do you want to know a secret? God longs to have that kind of relationship with you. Why don’t you ask Him?

Love,

Mama
