Who’s Your Daddy?

John 8:41. “You are doing the deeds of your father.” (NASB)
 
Recently we have had a couple of new babies born in our extended family. One of the first questions that goes through my mind whenever I see one of these precious bundles is, “Who does she look like?” In studying the sweet baby face, I usually notice that she has her mother’s eyes and father’s lips or some other comparison. This is very natural because each baby usually takes on some of the physical characteristics of their parents.

I love this picture of 3 generations. There are lots of similarities with us all. I am glad to be part of this family.

As time goes on the child grows and you can begin to see personality traits that mimic either mom or dad. How often have we had someone say that one of you boys sounds just like dad or the girls have mannerisms that mirror mine?
In Jesus’ continuing conversation with the religious leaders of the day, a conversation ensued as to who was the Pharisees’ true father. These pious men insisted that Abraham was their father. This was very important to them because they held the patriarch, Father Abraham, in high esteem. Much of their self-worth was wrapped up in their connection to this famous man. Jesus answered their boasts with these words, “If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.” 
 

Jesus went on to explain to them that if Abraham was their true father, God would also be their father. And if God were their father they would love Him because He was God’s Son and had come from the Father. Since they refused to understand the truth that He was speaking, a truth that even Abraham understood from afar, then their true daddy was the devil – a murderer, a liar, and the father of lies.This did not go over very well with these proud and important men, but the reality was that, though they claimed to have Abraham as their patriarch, they did not have the qualities of faith in God that he possessed. Their attitudes, thoughts, and actions resembled those of the devil.

When we claim to have God as our heavenly Father we should begin to think and act like Him. As we study His word and let the truths sink in and change our hearts, the likeness we bear should more and more be His. Those who belong to God will produce the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. When these characteristics do not permeate your being, you should begin to question who you belong to.

I know each of you children belong to Dad and me because you each genetically resemble us in one way or another.  But take a look at your hearts in the mirror of God’s word. Who do you resemble? What will be your answer when someone asks, “Who’s your daddy?”

    Sister Sandy,

    Thank you for this article. I just discovered it, because the Lord had impressed upon me to do a word-search for: "Who's Your Daddy."

    It is difficult for us to grasp God as our Father, and that we've been made in His image. Paul make mention of who we are in Galatians 4, when he wrote: "And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir."

    Hallelujah! or Hallelu-Yah! What a wonderful Truth!!!

    BTW: Hallelujah is a transliteration of the Hebrew word הַלְּלוּיָהּ, which is composed of two elements: הַלְּלוּ (second-person imperative masculine plural form of the Hebrew verb hallal: an exhortation to "praise" addressed to several people) and יָהּ (Yah) meaning God. (Remember when we taught our children the song: Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu-Jah, Praise ye the Lord" – we were truly praising Him using His words and we didn't know it – we had relegated it to a children's song when it could have been a message of praise from our hearts!)

    I do believe that we are now entering a time in which our understanding of His truth is being made clearer to His ekklesia (ek = out & klesia = called or "called out"). It is interesting that the message to all 7 churches of Revelation was: "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith to the "called out" (ekklesia). It's not an ear that hears physical sounds, but it's an ear that is attuned to the voice of the Son of God. (John 5:25) "…and they that hear, shall live…"

    We must have a "hearing ear" that is empowered through the Holy Spirit that we may learn who our "Daddy" is! Not many Christians realize this. In fact, if we speak too loudly and too often who our Daddy is, we may be treated in the same manner as the Pharisees treated Jesus when He claimed God to be His Father.

    Yet, the writer of Hebrews, understands our wonderful position because in chapter 2 he writes: "What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him?" Then the writer goes on to say: "For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory…For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified ARE ALL OF ONE, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren…" (Hebrews 2:10,11)
    Brethren? Yes, that's what we're called, and we "ARE ALL OF ONE." One what? The Family of God. Paul says it this way: "For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every "family" in heaven and on earth derives its name. (Eph. 3:14,15)

    Ahhh! "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man
    The things which God has prepared for those who love Him. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit…" (1 Cor. 2:9,10)

    Who's your Daddy? It's taken me nearly 70 years to learn this wonderful truth!
