Lord, Can You Please Repeat That?

Psalm 139:17-18 “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.”

Your Great Grandpa John Thomson with baby Luke just months before he passed away.

Dear Kids,

There are certain things you just want to hear over and over. When a special person pays you a compliment or declares their love, it bears repeating just for the sheer joy.

Great Grandpa Thomson was partially deaf. When he was around fifty years old, doctors  discovered cancer in one of his ears. He had surgery that, thankfully, removed the source of the problem, but it left him hard of hearing on that side. Great Grandpa used this problem to his advantage. Whenever someone would say something nice about him, he would cock his head, cup his good ear and say, “Could you please repeat that, I didn’t quite hear what you said?” This became a humorous family joke over the years and it always brought a good laugh.

I think Great Grandpa hit on something! Who doesn’t want to savor kind and encouraging words? There are certain passages in the Bible that give me that same desire. I could read them over and over again just to make sure I heard right and to revel in the precious message. Today’s verse is one of those.

As the Psalmist considered his relationship with God he was amazed that the King of the universe would think about him constantly. He exclaimed, “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.”

When I hear God whisper these same thoughts to me through His word, I also feel overwhelmed. I can hardly believe it, and it makes me want to adopt Great Grandpa’s habit.

Thankfully I can read the words over and over. They give me courage when I feel unlovely. They give me confidence when it seems the world is against me. They give me hope when everything seems to be falling apart.

What a joy to know you are loved. Find the Bible verses that express God’s heart about you. If you find it hard to believe or just want to hear the words again, don’t be afraid to ask, “Lord, can you please repeat that, I didn’t quite hear what you said?”

Love,

Mama
