Finding Freedom Beyond the 4th of July

“So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”

John 8:36

Dear Kids,

Loud booms thundered late into the evening last Sunday as many celebrated our nation’s birthday. For two hundred and forty-five years citizens have commemorated the signing of the United States’ Declaration of Independence. Friends and families gather for picnics and often end the day watching a fine display of fireworks filling the sky. All of this hoopla serves to remind us of our freedom. Yet despite the excitement and festivities of an important federal holiday, there are many, even in the USA, who are not truly free.

The Truth Will Make You Free

According to Jesus in John 8, those who believe and continue in Him will know the truth. This truth will make them free. Some of His listeners argued that they had never been enslaved to anyone so why did they need to be free? But Jesus was not speaking about a national sense of liberty. Instead He was speaking about an internal and spiritual state of freedom.

Family Language Explains Freedom

Jesus used family language to explain the different relationships experienced by people. Those who are part of God’s family realize freedom from sin’s slavery because they know and believe the truth. These understand they are sinners and need help, so they turn to the Savior for forgiveness. They are freely pardoned through Jesus, God’s Son. And when the Son sets them free they are free indeed.

On the other hand those tied to the devil can’t hear or understand the truth because they belong to the father of lies. Nothing he says is true; therefore, they are enslaved and under his control, committing over and over the same sinful deeds he promotes. They are slaves to sin, sometimes without even knowing it, with no way to escape the guilt and misery brought on by the weight of their sinful nature and misdeeds. The path to freedom is the message of the gospel. Those who believe in Jesus and persevere in faith will know Him as the truth experientially, and the truth will set them free.

Freedom is Found By Switching Allegiance

There are many, even in the United States of America, who despite national freedom deal daily with chains of guilt, fear, dread, and despair. But there is freedom available for all! This freedom is found by switching your allegiance. Face the truth of your sin, confess it to God, and receive His forgiveness.

So for those who celebrate the birthday of our nation’s freedom, consider where you stand spiritually. Are you in bondage to the devil, or have you found freedom for your soul? You can find liberty beyond the fourth of July. There are no slaves in God’s family, only sons and daughters. And if God’s Son makes you free you will be free indeed.

Love,

   Mama
