Following God’s Call – A Lesson from the Life of Abram

“Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you . . .”

Genesis 12:1

Dear Kids,

Most people like to have a plan when they set out on an adventure. Part of any journey involves laying out detailed instructions, making preparations, and setting goals. These planning steps keep you on track and help ensure arrival at the proper place. But what if you were asked to move forward without really knowing or understanding your destination? This would take a lot of faith! And that’s just what you need when allowing God to direct your life. But rest assured when someone steps out in answer to God’s call, He promises to guide him step-by-step.

God’s Call to Abram

One day God spoke to a man named Abram, telling him to leave his country of birth and to take a journey. He promised that He would bless him, make him into a great nation, protect him from harm, and bless the world through his family line. What an amazing opportunity for this otherwise ordinary man! The only drawback was that the LORD didn’t specify Abram’s exact destination or give any detailed directions on how to get there. He only told Abram to start out in faith and promised He would show Him where to go. So at the age of seventy-five years old Abram took this huge step of faith and launched out into the unknown.

For many years Abram travelled through the desert living as a tent dweller as he looked for the city God had designed for him. At times he struggled to find his way, made mistakes, and wondered what to do next. Tragically he even tried to fulfill God’s promise of a son by taking matters into his own hands. But through it all Abram made a habit of worshipping and calling on the name of the Lord regularly and God led him every step of the way. Abram believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness. In the end God fulfilled his promises to Abram and today, all believers throughout the world are the beneficiaries of the blessings that came through his descendant, Jesus Christ.

Life Lessons From the Life of Abram

The Biblical biography of Abram holds great importance for many reasons, and there are many lessons we can draw from his experiences. Every believer has been called by God to step out on a journey of faith.

Many times we may, like Abram, feel confused, wonder about the next move, or make mistakes when we take our eyes off of the Lord. A college student wonders about the next steps after graduation. Parents of young adults scratch their heads when dealing with unruly teens. The elderly question their purpose after retirement. Or an empty nest mama like me seeks to establish new goals now that her kids have set out on their own. It can all feel very frustrating and unclear. Yet Abram’s life of faith encourages us to keep moving forward and trust God to reveal the way one step at a time. And that is exactly what He will do!

Will You Answer God’s Call?

So, if you would like to go on a difficult but great adventure – one that promises blessing for you and for others as well – then get ready. It’s never too late to answer God’s call. And if you are already on this journey and find yourself confused about the next move, don’t despair. Just continue to worship and call upon the LORD each day. He will light your way, bringing you to the destination.

When God calls His children, He guides them step-by-step. He was faithful to Abram and He will be faithful to you. You can count on it!

Love,

Mama

What a great reminder of God’s FAITHFULNESS when we put our FAITH in him! It’s hard to imagine taking a journey without a destination in mind, but God does sometimes call us to simply TRUST and GO!

In a way all of life is like this. We plan our way but God is the One Who directs our paths. We start in one direction and sometimes He throws us a curve ball. But we can trust that He always has our best in mind and will bring us through for His glory!
