Signs and Signals – Faith in Jesus

“The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.”

Matthew 16:1

Dear Family & Friends,

There are lots of signs and signals that warn us of danger ahead. These are important to heed. If we choose to ignore them or waste time asking for more signs we may be putting ourselves at risk. Today is the day to put your faith in Jesus.

Tornado Warning

The other night people in our area were awakened in the middle of the night to sirens blaring. Springtime in the Midwest is tornado season, and those who have lived here for a while are aware of the signs. Warm, moist, and unstable air meeting with a cold front creates the right atmospheric conditions for severe weather. So when the sky turns green, winds pick up, and the siren sounds, we know to take shelter quickly.

Can you imagine how foolish it would be if all the signs were present but instead of acting we asked for more signs? We would likely be headed for disaster.

Reading the Signs

This is exactly what the religious leaders of Jesus’ day did. After seeing Jesus perform numerous miracles, they chose to ignore the signs already presented. In an effort to discredit Jesus, they asked for another sign from heaven to prove He was who He said He was. This request was intended to be a trap – it was not a sincere desire to know or understand more.

Jesus countered their conniving request by saying, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?”

Instead of granting their requests for a heavenly sign, He only pointed them to a sign of Jonah that He had previously given them as recorded in Chapter 12. The prophet, Jonah, who spent three hellish days in the belly of a great fish pointed to the three days and nights that the Son of Man would be in the heart of the earth. Jesus then turned and left them. These religious leaders who had chosen to ignore the truth lost their opportunity.

A Sad Commentary

What an incredibly sad commentary on men who should have recognized the truth! They knew the Old Testament scriptures and the prophecies like the back of their hands, but instead of demonstrating faith in God’s word, they refused to accept the signs God had given them.

The Bible promises that those who seek God will find Him. But many who have had adequate opportunity to respond to the truth don’t act on it in faith. Some figure they will wait for a more convenient season. Others get so wrapped up in their everyday activities that they don’t take the time to consider Who God is and how they should respond to Him. Still others continue to ask for more proof when everything they need is right in front of them. Many others, just like the religious leaders of Jesus’ time,  just refuse to believe.

Put Your Faith in Jesus Now

But time is short! Just as tornados come on suddenly and we must be prepared and ready, so Jesus could return or our time on earth could be cut short. A more convenient season may never come. So instead of asking for more signs, respond to the truth you have and put your faith in Jesus now.

When It’s tornado season and you see the sky and hear the siren you must get to shelter immediately. “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts. . .(Hebrews 3:15)

Forty five years ago I heard the gospel from the pulpit of a small church in the college town I was living in with my brand new husband. I also heard the Pastor say “Today is the day of salvation! Your life may end at any time-then you’ll never have another chance to put your faith in Christ.” I wanted more “proof” that God really existed but what the pastor said really resonated with me. I didn’t want to wait for that proof so few days later I took that step in faith and gave my life to the Lord. Praise God my eternal life is secure!
