Daily time with the Lord in His word is good for so many reasons, It reminds us of who God is and how He loves us. It gives us guidance and strength for the day ahead. It also helps us to straighten out our thoughts and understanding of life that might be askew. Getting the right perspective to transform your mind changes everything.

A Photography Tip

It was only a short time ago that my photographer friend showed me a handy feature on my iPhone’s photo app. After taking a picture I can now edit, crop, and then straighten out a picture. This is helpful if my image includes an object that is slanted or cockeyed because of the way I held the phone when I snapped the photo. While the original take may look crooked, after the edit, the lines show up straight and this is easier on the eye.

Transform Your Mind

While sitting and using this app feature on some photographs from our recent trip to the state of Oregon, I considered how my daily quiet time in the Word is like the edit feature on my phone. So often during the day and even in the unconsciousness of sleep my thoughts get out of whack.

Problems loom large and cause my emotions to roil like a raging river tumbling over a mountain cliff. Before I know it, I can be a wreck over things when I should be trusting the Lord. Other times I obsess over a personal slight until it grows into a monstrosity, creating bitterness and anger when I should be forgiving and kind.

I don’t believe I am alone in this. In a world filled with many confusing situations and ungodly voices shouting at you, it is easy to interpret your circumstances through a crooked lens. You need to transform your mind from the pattern of the world. This happens as you renew your thoughts with God’s word.

Time in God’s Word will Transform Your Mind

As we spend daily time in the Word, God edits our perspective with His truth. Any huge problem we are facing shrinks in size when we consider His greatness and power. Feelings of rejection dissipate when we read of His great love for us. Reminders of His incredible patience and forgiveness towards us straighten out any crooked and worldly response patterns towards those who offend us. Instead of revenge, we realize we need to offer the same kind of forgiveness that we have been given.

It really is amazing what the right perspective will do. It provides a better outlook on life and also causes us to reflect the true character of God as seen in our actions and attitudes. This transformation can only happen as we daily search the Scriptures, relying on the Holy Spirit, to point out the areas where our thoughts are askew and then adjusting them to come in line with God’s message.

With these daily edits on our thoughts, minds, and hearts, our lives reveal a beautiful picture of grace and godliness in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom we shine as lights.

So, I must thank my photographer friend for showing me the edit feature on my iPhone, not only for the easy adjustment for pictures that are out of line, but also for the reminder of how much we need a powerful editing tool to transform our mind. God’s Word, the Bible, empowered by the Holy Spirit, is that tool. Make sure you use it every day!
