Family Faith Legacy: What Timothy’s Story Teaches Us

“I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also”

2 Timothy 1:5

Dear Friends,

What legacy will you leave behind?
There’s one thing certain in this life: death. One day, each of us will finish our earthly race and follow the path of those who came before us. Though death isn’t a favorite topic of conversation, it’s an important one to reflect on. How you live now will shape the memories and influence you leave behind.

Famous Lives, Familiar Losses

Recently, I was reminded again of life’s unpredictability. Perhaps you, like me, saw familiar names appear one by one on social media – famous actors and entertainers, once household names, who have now faced the inevitable reality of death. Each one is gone, but each left a legacy.

One name that stood out to me was Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Many people my age will always remember “Theo,” the lovable, sometimes unpredictable son of Heathcliff and Claire Huxtable on The Cosby Show. He and the rest of the cast made us laugh while teaching life lessons that still stick with us today.

The passing of well-known people is a sobering reminder of our own mortality. The unsettling truth that life is short makes us pause and ask: How will I be remembered? What legacy will I leave behind?

A Look at My Own Family Roots

When we look back, we see how those who came before us shaped our lives. Now we are the next link in the chain, influencing future generations.

Learning about our roots has never been easier. Recently, Luke picked up an interesting hobby, family genealogy, one Dad started years ago. Thanks to the internet, Luke has expanded Dad’s research to include my side of the family too. It’s been fascinating to discover details about ancestors I knew little about.

Census records, newspaper clippings, and ship manifests have revealed rich details about my heritage, like the setting and decorations at my great-grandparents’ wedding. This couple, born in the late 1800s, were shaped by generations before them, and their choices laid a foundation for who my children and I are today.

How Timothy’s Family Shaped His Faith

When the Apostle Paul wrote to his protégé Timothy, he reminded him of the faith-filled legacy that shaped his life. Timothy’s sincere faith first lived in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. These faithful women passed down their love for God by teaching him the Holy Scriptures.

The Power of a Faith Legacy

That same truth of Scripture has been handed down from generation to generation by faithful people. For my family, it arrived in 1887 when D. L. Moody and Ira B. Sankey brought the gospel message to Scotland.

According to a letter written by a distant family member Jessie Shewan Giles, to my great-aunt, Flora Thomson Brown, Moody and Sankey visited the country folk living on the Hill of Belnagoak, where my ancestors farmed a small plot of land. That day, they heard the message of salvation and turned to Christ. They, in turn, taught the truth to their children, who then taught it to theirs.

I’m so grateful for the lives of those who came before me. Many of them, though imperfect, shaped who I am today. But the question still remains: What legacy will I leave behind?

It’s Never Too Late to Start Your Legacy

It’s never too late to begin. Mourning the loss of influential people, though heartbreaking, can shift our perspective. What you do now matters. So choose wisely.

Love,

Mama

Your life today is building tomorrow’s legacy. What story will your children and grandchildren tell? Take time this week to reflect, pray, and ask God to help you leave behind a faith legacy that points others to Him.
